L'Absurdité - Gilbert Garcin - Kevis House

L'Absurdité - Gilbert Garcin

1 - 28  March

Kevis House Exhibition 10am - 5pm.

Gilbert Garcin's photographs highlight the absurdity of the human condition by creating scenes that raise both questions and smiles.

Garcin's black and white photographs are created using the technique of photomontage. The dadaists were the first to use photomontage in 1915 in their protests against the First World War, and the technique was later adopted by the surrealists. Garcin uses no modern digital photo manipulation to achieve his ingenious images.

Garcin ran a lighting fixture company near Marseilles until he was 60, and only then did he become a photographic artist. Now aged 87, he has recently ceased creating photographs.

Almost all the images all feature Garcin himself in some way or other, often posing in an grey overcoat as “Mr Everybody”.

All the photographs in the exhibition are limited edition silver gelatin prints, usually from an edition of 12. Prices range from £900 - £1,800, including hand made frames made for Paul and Toni Arden.

The exhibition is being held at the Kevis House Gallery, Lombard Street, Petworth in association with Toni Arden. Between 2003 and 2011 Toni ran the photography gallery Arden and Anstruther in the same street. The gallery had been founded with her husband Paul Arden. This is Toni's first exhibition for several years.

Paul Arden, who died in 2008, was the legendary creative director at Saatchi and Saatchi. He was responsible for some of the UK's most memorable ad campaigns, and for of the such lines as "The Independent. It is. Are you?" and "The car in front is a Toyota". During his career he worked with many of the top photographers of the day, leading to a wider interest in collecting photography. , including the work of Gilbert Garcin.

Garcin's work is in many private and public collections including: Fonds national pour l'art Contemporain, France; Fonds Communal pour l'art Contemporain de Marseille; Maison Européenne de la Photographie, Paris; Artothèque de Nantes, Nantes; Artothèque de Vitré, Vitré; Médiathèque de Miramas, Miramas; Fondation Regards de Provence, Marseille; Galerie du Château d'Eau, Toulouse; Artothèque de Veendam, the Netherlands; and the West Collection, Philadelphia.
