2 MARCH - 15 APRIL
Muncaster (1903-1974) was a local painter specialising in watercolours. He travelled the world by boat, sketching topographical landscapes and marine subjects, and also served as a naval camouflage specialist in the Second World War. His ties with the local area were consistent throughout his life: born in West Chiltington, he grew up in Sutton and settled with his own family in Byworth, before eventually moving back into his childhood home at Sutton. Many of the local landscapes in the exhibition were painted in the interwar years, with sketches of Arundel Bridge, the road at Northchapel and a cottage at Bignor. The exhibition also includes work from further afield, including London, Northern England, Scotland, Europe and North Africa, as well as some of his marine paintings from mid-ocean. We had a smaller selection of Muncaster pictures on view when we first opened the gallery and they seemed to strike a chord with local residents so we very much hope this will be a popular show.
