Jack's Veterans Walk 2019
In aid of the Petworth British Legion Poppy Appeal
It is amazing how quickly Autumn has come around again, and with it our walk to start the Petworth Poppy Appeal. Some already have this date in the diary, but the important bit is to know where we are meeting!
Once again the walk is being organised by John Rosser, who has done so since it was initiated by Jack Holloway – a Burma Star veteran – in 1998, to raise funds for the Petworth Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. It will take place this year on Saturday, 5 October, meeting at 9.30am at TheCricketers, Duncton, Petworth (GU28 0LB).
This year’s walk should be a treat, starting with beautiful views towards Petworth as we head out towards Lavington Common and pass through the famous Westerlands and Lavington Studs before reaching Graffham and its majestic views of the Downs, returning to Duncton through the lovely grounds of Seaford College.
We aim to assemble from 9.30am for a 10am start. All ages and dogs are welcome, and the aim is to have fun. We will return to The Cricketers at the end of the walk in time for a sandwich lunch and hope you will stay for this. As usual, John Rosser will be collecting orders before we set out - so make sure that you bring sufficient cash for a drink and a sandwich.
We hope that you will be able to obtain sponsorship for the walk and I enclose a sponsorship form which several of our walkers manage to fill very successfully each year – a number of modest sponsors soon adds up. We raised £1,000 last year and are looking to beat this figure in 2019. This will require generous giving because sadly, the last few years have seen the passing of some notable WWII veterans. We are hoping that others, especially a younger generation, can step into their shoes to honour their memories and the important work of the Royal British Legion. So please pass on this email and spread the word so that new walkers and supporters can continue this wonderful local tradition.
For those who prefer to do things on-line, I have set up a JustGiving page https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/jackssponsoredwalk2019 to make it easy to make or collect donations and to register for gift aid (where appropriate).
