‘Living Maps’ brings together an extensive display of enticing prints and drawings, cartographic and panoramic scenes by the celebrated artist-mapmaker Adam Dant. Unveilled alongside this exhibition, we are excited to present ‘Petworth Places – A Guide to the Town and It’s People’, the latest creation by Adam depicting this jewel in the crown of West Sussex.
Recently collected in two handsome publications ‘Maps of London and Beyond’ (Batsford Books) and ‘Living Maps’ (Chronicle Books), Dant’s thoroughly engaging artworks offer the viewer dense visual narratives that are by turns historical, fantastical and alive with anecdote and episode.
With ‘Petworth Places – A Guide to the Town and It’s People’ we discover the environs, history, people and places that surround the spacious Georgian townhouse location of Augustus Brandt in Petworth, celebrated through Dant’s unique style and vision.
Witty, subversive, elegant and always surprising, the creative output of Dant has seen him appointed by the UK Parliament as their official 2015 election artist, celebrating 175 years of Christie’s auction house as their artist in residence and surveying the domain of the ‘beau mode’ as the cover artist of Spears WMS magazine.
Born in Cambridge, 1967, Adam Dant graduated from the Royal College of Art in 1992, where he studied Fine Art Printmaking, an art form he had embraced whilst a student at the prestigious Maharaja Sayajirao University in India.
An award-winning artist, Dant was the recipient of the Rome Scholarship in Etching and Engraving in 1993, and the winner of The Jerwood Drawing prize in 2003. His recently published volume of ‘Maps of London and Beyond’ was given the 2019 International Creative Media Award’s Gold Medal.
Dant has won praise from The Financial Times for his ‘witting and richly complex Hogarthian style’. Combining contemporary life with eternal mythologies, his elaborate and perceptive narrative drawings saw The Art Newspaper declare him ‘The draughtsman laureate of the London Art World’.
Dant’s work has been widely exhibited at home and abroad. His ‘Budge Row Bibliotheque’ series of drawings which investigate 2000 years of one street in The City of London currently greet visitors to Bloomberg’s new London headquarters.
Dant’s prints and drawings can be found in numerous public and private collections including Tate Britain, MOMA New York, Musee D’Art Contemporain Lyon, The Victoria and Albert Museum, UBS and HRH The Prince of Wales.
Adam Dant lives in London with his wife, daughter and Scottish Terrier Dr Watson (who is a huge fan of Petworth and the surrounding West Sussex countryside).
We welcome Adam and his work to Petworth.
