Each room glows with wonder: celestial skies\, roaming woodland creatures\, towering trees\, and spaces to pause and reflect. Mice scurry beneath gilded furniture\, foxes watch from shadowed corners\, and the stars themselves seem to whisper of returning light. \nOn Saturday 29 November and Saturday 20 December you can experience the festive atmosphere of Petworth House after dark\, with sparkling lights and a courtyard choir marking the turning of the season. A chance to enjoy the house’s winter transformation in a new light. The House will be open until 6.30pm (last entry at 6pm)\, with a choir performing at 5.30pm. \nOn Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 November there will be a Christmas makers market in the Battery House and Exhibition Room selling festive gifts\, held in partnership with Petworth Pop-up. \n

DESCRIPTION:7 JUNE – 14 SEPTEMBER 2025 \nWednesday to Saturday 10.00am – 5.00pm \nSunday 11.00am – 4.00pm \n“Andy Warhol: My True Story”\, curated by Jean Wainwright at Newlands House offers a fresh perspective on Andy Warhol in an intimate presentation of drawings\, prints\, photographs\, recordings\, films\, and archival paraphernalia. \nFrom drawings such as Man with Hearts and a fictitious One Million Dollar Bill\, screenprints including Mona Lisa (Four times)\, photographs by contemporaries like Bob Adelman’s Andy Warhol Empties his Boots after being Pushed into the Pool by Edie Sedgewick\, and an intimate film of his mother\, we glimpse a very human Warhol experimenting with ideas and subject matter. Warhol was an inveterate collector and observer\, and his early drawings reveal both his fascination with the ordinary and the way he processed and communicated his subject matter in his own particular style\, developing themes which recur and evolve in his later works. \nThe exhibition intertwines artworks\, photographs\, objects and artefacts with reflective recordings of his entourage\, those closest to him\, and his family. What is revealed is an elusive and private man\, hiding behind a public party-going persona\, with his wig and dark glasses and provocative soundbites\, creator of his Factories and iconic artworks and producer of the Velvet Underground. His prescience and lasting influence are also witnessed through artworks by contemporary artists such as Gavin Turk and Rob and Nick Carter\, his “brand” exemplified through Warhol-themed objects and memorabilia. In this intimate and personal show\, we experience Warhol in different ways as each room reveals a facet of him as well as those he inspired. \nThe domestic spaces of Newlands House Gallery\, a Grade II-listed 18th Century townhouse\, seem fitting for an exhibition that offers unexpected narratives on one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. \nJean Wainwright\, an internationally recognised Warhol expert\, is a London-based art historian\, critic and curator. Her work most prominently features interviews with international artists\, photographers\, filmmakers\, and curators. As a writer and academic\, her interviews can be found in the numerous books\, catalogues\, monologues\, and peer-reviewed journals\, and she has appeared widely in the media\, including national radio and television. A Professor of Contemporary Art and Photography at the University for the Creative Arts\, Wainwright has a particular interest in authenticity in the artist interview and finding the artist’s “voice”.

DESCRIPTION:15 FEBRUARY 2025 \n3.30pm – 7.30pm \n\nTwo colourful laser light shows will be coming to Petworth House next month for the first time thanks to a collaboration between Chichester District Council and The National Trust.\nThe free shows – each lasting approximately 20 minutes – will kick off the February half term holiday\, taking place on Saturday 15 February at 5.30pm and 6.45pm. The beautiful Petworth House will be lit up accompanied by music that will be synchronised to the lights.\nDuring the day a number of activities will take place in the build-up to the shows. Petworth House will be open for free from 10.30am until 3.30pm\, while 12noon – 4.30pm there will also be free drop-in crafts in The Battery House where children will be able to get creative\, inspired by the laser show. In addition\, there will also be live music in The Courtyard from local musicians\, with performances running 3.30pm – 5.15pm and 6pm – 6.30pm plus local vendors providing food and drink.\n

DESCRIPTION:19–21 May 2023 \nFriday 11.00–18.00 | Saturday 10.30–18.00 | Sunday 10.30–17.00 \nFollowing eight successful years in Petworth Park\, the fair is scheduled to return 19-21 May 2023. The famous National Trust property in the picturesque market town of Petworth has proved an ideal venue\, attracting thousands of eager visitors. In its spacious marquee\, the Petworth Park Antiques & Fine Art Fair has around 60 exhibitors\, predominantly members of The British Antique Dealers’ Association and LAPADA The Association of Art & Antiques Dealers. They offer for sale a wide range of desirable items from furniture\, jewellery\, sculpture\, glass\, lighting\, photography\, vintage watches and silver to paintings\, drawings\, ceramics\, clocks\, 20th century design objects\, maps\, prints\, oriental carpets\, tribal art\, historical medals\, aeronautica\, garden ornaments and many other decorative and unique works of art spanning the centuries. \nWe are very happy to again work with The National Trust at Petworth House as well as with the local dealer association PAADA and the Petworth Business Association\, creating yet another exciting event. The grand 17th century house boasts an internationally important art collection\, and together with its ‘Capability’ Brown landscaped country park\, it provides a magnificent backdrop for our annual fair. \nThe fair has its own free car park by the marquee – access is from the A272 Tillington Road through the gate at New Lodges. The AA signs will direct traffic to this entrance and not to the main car park on the A283\, where there is a charge of £4 for non-National Trust members. Disabled parking close to the fair entrance. The pedestrian entrance is via the Cricket Lodge gate\, also on the A272\, or via the Cowyard. \nFair visitors enjoy free access to Petworth House during the three day event. DESCRIPTION:2 APRIL –  14 AUGUST 2022 \nWednesday – Saturday 10am-5pm \nSunday 11am-4pm \nNewlands House Gallery will celebrate the renowned German-British artist Frank Auerbach with an exhibition of works spanning over 60 years of his prolific career \nBook Tickets \n\n\nOpening 2nd April\, Newlands House Gallery presents ‘Frank Auerbach: Unseen’ that will explore the evolution of the contemporary painter’s practice with a collection of over 65 works\, including nine paintings\, etchings\, drawings and Drypoint prints. Presented within Newlands House Gallery’s Georgian building in the historic town of Petworth\, on display will be works spanning from the 1950s to present day that portray Auerbach as a tireless creator\, while reflecting on the influences and relationships that have informed his striking style. A collection of works by the artist\, on loan from the Tate\, will also be displayed together for the first time in 30 years. \nFrank Auerbach (b.1931) is renowned for his resonant figurative works that are defined by rich texture and depth. Auerbach’s works are created by a relentless process of painting a canvas before scraping away to start again\, which is a technique that he undertakes multiple times to complete works in one sitting. Frank Auerbach: Unseen will unravel the development of this unique practice with a large collection of works presented chronologically\, including loans from the National Gallery\, Tate\, and Fitzwilliam Museum. \nThe exhibition will offer an intimate insight into Auerbach’s career and begins with the artist’s portraits of close friends including Lucian Freud\, Leon Kossoff and a large oil painting of Estelle Stella Olive West (E.O.W) – a frequent female model for the artist. Early etchings dating to the 1950s drawn by Auerbach at art school\, will stand alongside later works by a matured Auerbach in the 1980s. These capture the intense experience of sitting for an artist with an indefatigable practice like Auerbach’s. Etchings of his wife\, Julia\, depict her reclining form\, while the thickly layered paint on Head of E.O.W I (1960)\, is indicative of the length of time Auerbach spent overpainting this work. \nThe influence of Auerbach’s important relationships with the Old Masters that preceded him and a discreet collector\, David Wilke\, will also be examined. Wilke’s collection of commissioned paintings will be on display together for the first time in 30 years since bequeathed to the Tate in 1993. This includes Auerbach’s renowned oil paintings of Bacchus and Ariadne (1971)\, based on Titian’s classical work\, and Rimbaud (1975-6) that depicts the 19th century French poet in the Cornaro Chapel\, Rome. This work is the result of the pair’s playful relationship upheld between the art-admirer and artist. Auerbach denied Wilke’s initial request to paint Bernini’s ‘Ecstasy of St Teresa’ in the Roman chapel yet responded by transplanting Rimbaud into the setting for this later commission. \nBook Tickets in advance here.

She was personally invited by him to open all 21 shows on his recent UK tour\, the finale of which was at the Royal Albert Hall\, after which she and her band received a standing ovation. “I can honestly say it was the first time I had seen an audience stand and applaud a support act.” . To top things off\, Alfie welcomed Hattie back onto the stage each night during his set to perform a duet\, which went down a storm with audiences.

DESCRIPTION:8 – 19 FEBRUARY 2022 \n10.00am – 6.00pm \nRenowned war artist launches new book with exhibition in Petworth gallery. \nArtist Gordon Rushmer who was born in Petersfield and still lives locally has written a book about his  years working as an official war artist for the British and Dutch Royal Marines and Special Forces. Fully illustrated with all his paintings from the many military engagements he accompanied abroad\, this book and the original artworks will be exhibited by Rountree Tryon Galleries in Petworth from 8th-19th February. \nGordon worked alongside elite military units in Bosnia\, Kosovo\, Afghanistan\, Iraq and Eritrea from 1997 to 2007 and has written a full account of his experiences\, to accompany the watercolour and oil paintings he produced in the field. \nGallery director Chantelle Rountree said\, “It continues to be our pleasure to represent Gordon’s work; these works are so important at helping us empathise and understand what war means to those who are part of it. It may come as a surprise to many of his collectors who are more familiar with his bucolic landscapes\, to encounter the harrowing realities of war and gain a rare and moving insight into Gordon’s ‘double life’. Having the likes of Alison Weir talking in person about Henry VIII’s Queens; Prof A C Grayling about The Frontiers of Knowledge; Hamish de Bretton-Gordon about his extraordinary\, death-defying exploits as a chemical and biological weapons expert; Dr Tessa Dunlop about the enduring legacy of the women who were a crucial part of the second world war effort; Prof Christina Riggs about the glories of the Tutankhamun treasures and their wider cultural legacy; and Sebastian Faulks\, Jeffrey Archer and Jeremy Vine about their latest novels\, it should be clear that we are about to be spoiled for choice over the coming nine days. \nWe do hope you will join us in person. The majority of the events are in St Mary’s Church this year where we trust everyone will feel comfortable with the levels of ventilation. If you would prefer to watch online\, that option of course is available and will remain so until Sunday 28 November \n*all events held in St Mary’s Petworth will be streamed live online and available to view on demand for three weeks after the event.
