DESCRIPTION:1 NOVEMBER 2025 – 19 APRIL 2026 \nWednesday to Saturday 10.00am – 5.00pm\nSunday 11.00am – 4.00pm \nJane Bown: Play Shadow offers an intimate portrait of one of Britain’s most revered photographers\, Jane Bown (1925–2014)\, whose quietly powerful black-and-white portraits have become iconic within the canon of twentieth-century photography. \nThe exhibition expands beyond the familiar public image of Bown’s work to reveal the deeply personal vision and consistent philosophy that guided her practice: a belief in simplicity\, natural light\, and the decisive presence of a good face. \nBown’s mastery lay in her ability to work quickly\, intuitively\, and with minimal equipment\, most famously\, her Olympus OM-1 and either an 85mm for close up portraits or a 55mm lens when she wanted context for the sitter. Her reliance on natural light\, often soft and north-facing\, created striking chiaroscuro effects that gave her portraits psychological depth and subtle drama. Play Shadow gestures both to the technical precision with which Bown orchestrated light and to the emotional resonance and mystery she was able to draw out of her subjects\, often within moments of meeting them. \nRecognised for photographing cultural icons from Samuel Beckett to Queen Elizabeth II\, Bown was nonetheless uninterested in celebrity. Her images stripped away artifice\, offering instead an honest\, often vulnerable glimpse into the human behind the persona. A photograph of Anthony Blunt\, taken before the public revelation of his espionage\, has since been seen as eerily prescient\, light and shadow working not just as aesthetic choices but as metaphors for truth and concealment. \nBown also photographed some of the most influential artists of the twentieth century\, including Henry Moore\, Paula Rego\, David Hockney\, and Francis Bacon. This exhibition will feature not only Bown’s portraits of these figures but also selected works by the artists themselves\, creating a dynamic conversation between sitter and maker\, photograph and artwork. \nJane Bown: Play Shadow celebrates her lasting connection to the region and to future generations of image-makers. An alumna of the Guildford School of Art -UK’s only full-time photography course at the time\, directed by Ifor Thomas- now part of the University for the Creative Arts (UCA)\, Bown’s legacy continues to inspire. Current UCA students have been invited to respond to her work\, with selected contemporary pieces\, and interventions\,  included in the exhibition to reflect on her enduring influence. \nThis exhibition gathers a selection photographs\, some rarely shown\, across several thematic groupings that explore Bown’s approach to composition\, light\, and emotional presence. SUMMARY:European Visions - Art in Transition
DESCRIPTION:7 FEBRUARY – 18 APRIL 2026\n\n10.00am – 5.00pm\n\nWe are delighted to welcome you to the opening of our new exhibition\, European Visions: Art in Transition\, this Saturday\, 7th February\, running through to 18th April. A new year brings fresh perspectives: the gallery is brimming with eclectic works from 20th-century Europe\, reflecting the shifting currents and creative experimentation\, perfectly echoing the exhibition’s title.\n\nAmong the highlights\, we have a number of Nafir Boaba’s works\, dazzling with strong\, bright colour and a confident\, Picasso-esque sense of design. Yves Ganne’s paintings\, spanning the 1940s to 1970s\, range from vibrant figurative studies to still lifes\, rendered in a wide variety of hues and tones to suit the mood.\n\nThe exhibition also features works on paper\, including a signed and numbered etching by Max Ernst\, several signed prints by Salvador Dalí\, and two pastel abstracts by Bernhard Brodda\, all of which add a lively\, eclectic energy to the collection.\nJoin us for the opening on Saturday\, 12–2pm\, where drinks will be served as you explore the exhibition. \n

SUMMARY:Piers Ottey Paintings\, Confronting Illusion
DESCRIPTION:Various Dates\nTuesday to Thursday from 11am to 4pm \n10-12 March\,  17-19 March\,  24-26 March \nConfronting Illusion features stunning paintings by Sussex based artist Piers Ottey whose works are instantly recognisable.  His trademark ‘colour code’ around the edge of paintings\, drawing marks and overpainting are all to be seen in these seemingly simple works. \nOpen to the public for three weeks in March at Champs Hill: \nTickets £10* on the door or via website \nwww.thebct.org.uk \n*includes tea/coffee/biscuits\, parking and opportunity to explore the grounds. \nChamps Hill is delighted to present this striking collection of paintings by Piers Ottey.  Much of Piers’ work derives from visiting places at home and abroad.  He has worked on images from the mountains of Switzerland to city paintings of San Francisco and London\, where he was born and raised\, but most often he returns to paint the Sussex landscape. \nPiers works from his studio in West Sussex\, on the edge of the Downs\, and paints what he is passionate about – the local landscape\, his travels abroad and even his motorbikes!

SUMMARY:JOHN HITCHENS; PATTERNS OF SEEING - Paintings Past and Present at Moncrieff Bray Gallery
DESCRIPTION:28 MARCH – 18 APRIL 2026 \nSaturday 28 March and Sunday 29 March open 10am – 6pm \nThereafter Tuesday to Saturday\, 10am – 4pm \nEXHIBITION OPENING PARTY SAT 28 March 4pm – 6pm \nThe early paintings in the exhibition\, such as Selsey Marshland demonstrate John Hitchens’s remarkable talent as a young artist. They highlight his ability to organise complex compositions and to depict light and shade through broad\, expressive tones. \nFrom 1968\, Hitchens focused on the expansive views from the edge of Duncton Hill\, overlooking the Sussex Weald. He established an open-air studio at this location and returned repeatedly over the next nine years to capture the changing landscape. The exhibition features ten significant paintings from this period\, showcasing his evolving approach to landscape from Lowland Panorama March to more abstract works like Distant Orchard and Fields II. \nDuring the 1980s\, Hitchens’s attention turned to the Far Wood at Greenleaves in Graffham. Again\, he set up an outdoor studio and revisited the same site\, painting in series. The exhibition includes 15 paintings from this exceptional period when he produced highly personal and powerful paintings. \nThese works are the product of deep visual thinking and analysis as Hitchens concentrates on striking the exact balance of colour\, form and space. In a single work\, like Far Wood Looking North\, one moves fluidly from one perspective to another while playing with spatial relationships\, rhythm\, and harmony. \nAlways seeking new modes of expression\, Hitchens’s work in the early 1990s took a new abstract direction\, focusing on man’s interaction with the landscape. This was partly inspired by flights  in a Cessna in 1990\, from Goodwood airport over the Downs. From the air\, he observed not only natural landforms\, such as contours\, riverbeds\, and ancient woodland\, but also the traces of centuries of human influence—field boundaries\, plough lines\, fence posts\, ancient footpaths\, and stubble burning. He moved away from a naturalistic palette\, concentrating instead on the formal qualities of a limited range of colours. The final section of the exhibition is dedicated to Hitchens’s later landscapes\, which reveal his growing interest in abstraction and the material qualities of the land itself. \nThree-dimensional works are also prominently featured. These pieces demonstrate his direct engagement with the physical elements of his surroundings. Among them are paintings created on timber recovered from the devastation of the Great Storm of 1987\, as well as sand paintings constructed from layered strata of different coloured sands. \nHitchens was the subject of a major exhibition at Southampton City Art Gallery in 2020\, which surveyed his entire body of work from the 1960s to the present day.
