SUMMARY:A Garden like no other: Edward James & Las Pozas - Arts Society West Sussex
DESCRIPTION:6 JULY 2021 \n2.00pm – 3.00pm \nIn the depths of the Mexican jungle lies an enchanted valley in which strange ruins tower over waterfalls and pools. It seems like the remains of a lost civilisation\, but the arches and stairways were built only in the last century by Edward James\, a rich English eccentric and Surrealist. Ranging around the world and across the 20th century\, this colourful lecture tells the story of Edward James and Las Pozas\, introducing along the way an array of intriguing characters\, and exploring the wider theme of the modern artist-gardener. \nHaving studied History at Pembroke College\, Cambridge\, James Russell enjoyed a lengthy stint selling contemporary paintings and sculpture in Santa Fe\, New Mexico\, an experience that inspired him to begin writing and lecturing on 20th century art. Of his dozen or so books\, one was a Sunday Times book of the year\, while his writing has been described by critics as ‘insightful’\, ‘informative’ and ‘enjoyably readable’. The curator of two major exhibitions at Dulwich Picture Gallery\, James has lectured across Britain and beyond. He prefers to lecture without notes\, drawing on wide-ranging original research\, and on in-depth knowledge of the subjects that fascinate him. \nWhilst Covid-19 restrictions are in force our Talks will be delivered via Zoom at our usual meeting time\, that is to say\, at 2:00pm on the 1st Tuesday of the Month. We will email all members with the link to join these Talks in the week before they are due to take place. Visitors are welcome to join these Talks for the normal visitors fee of £5 per Talk\, if you wish to join as a visitor please lets us know using the Contact Us form.

DESCRIPTION:31 JULY 2021 \n11:00 – 12:30 & 2.00pm – 3.30pm \n \n\n\n\nWe are delighted to offer an exciting range of learning experiences that can be enjoyed outside\, within Petworth Park’s beautiful grounds.\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this event\n\n\nThe focus of this session will be on developing an understanding of the Chakras or energy centres in the body. You will be taught a range of yoga postures and meditation to help release and work to heal any imbalance\, aiding flexibility\, strength and overall body awareness. The warm up that is included will enable you to mobilise your joints. Special breathing techniques will be taught to focus on improving your breathing\, whilst the mind Yoga philosophy will be an integral part of the session\, adding to the overall understanding of the practice of Yoga. All yoga classes finish with a period of relaxation\, to integrate the undoing in the body of the postures and this naturally leads to preparing the mind for meditation. \nWeather permitting\, the teaching of yoga lends itself to being enjoyed outside in an open area. It is so nice to be able to meditate outside to feel the warmth of the sun\, hear the rustling of the trees\, the sounds of the birds and just be a part of nature. \nPlease note that this event will run outside\, within the stunning grounds of Petworth Park. Therefore\, in order to gain the most from this experience\, please read the information below. \n\nWhat previous experience\, knowledge or qualifications do I need for this course?\nThis class is suitable for all.\nWhat do I need to bring with me?\nPlease wear clothing appropriate for exercise and bring a bottle of water and something to lie on such as a mat or blanket. \nPlease remember that your supplies must be portable and easy to carry! \n\n\n\nIMPORTANT INFORMATION:\nThis class is for those aged 18+ years\nPlease arrive at least 15 minutes before your course starts to allow sufficient time to park and to ensure that the class can start promptly. Your tutor will meet you opposite the Visitor Centre in the Main Visitor Car park for the House. \nPlease note there will be a 15 minute walk across uneven and sloping ground from the meeting point to the area of the Park where the class will take place. \nAs this is an outside class please arrive prepared and wearing appropriate clothing\, however\, If the weather is too bad to complete this course outside\, then the class will be cancelled. \nPlease abide by any covid related measures applicable at the time. \nThis event does not include entrance to Petworth House and the Pleasure Grounds\, although tickets can be purchased from the Visitor Centre after your event. \n\n\nRead more….
