SUMMARY:Chris Orr RA & Caron Penney at Kevis House Gallery
DESCRIPTION:3 MARCH – 9 APRIL 2022 \nTuesday – Saturday: 10am – 5pm \nA series of eight Satires for our time.\, being shown together for the first time \n\nCHRIS ORR\nBorn in London in 1943\, Chris Orr studied at the Royal College of Art 1964-1967. He was elected a Royal Academician in 1995\, and was Professor of Printmaking at the Royal College of Art 1998-2008. He was awarded an MBE and made Professor Emeritus in 2008. Elected as Treasurer of the Royal Academy and served from 2014 to 2018 \nChris Orr has had numerous exhibitions throughout the world which include: ‘The Complete Chris Orr’ (touring show)\, 1976; ‘Many Mansions’ (touring show)\, 1990; Six Royal Academicians in China’\, shown in Beijing\, Shanghai\, and London\,  2005; LithORR graphy’\, Royal Academy\, Fine Rooms 2012. ‘The Miserable Lives of Fabulous Artists’ Royal Academy 2018. \nHis work is in public collections including The Arts Council of England\, The British Council\, The British Museum\, The Government Art Collection\, The Palace of Westminster Collection\, The Ruskin Library at Lancaster University\, The Queens Collection\, National Portrait Gallery\, Royal Academy of Arts\, Science Museum\, Tate Britain\, and Victorian and Albert Museum. \n”Prints come quite naturally in series. The artist can develop a theme\, construct a multi level narrative and explore many aspects of ideas and techniques. A turning point in my career came through making 10 etchings about the life of John Ruskin back in the 1970s. I went on to make many prints and paintings that have serial themes and work in groups. \nIn 2021\, with endless fanfares and raspberries\, we were on the cusp of coming out of the state of paralysis to a fragile new\, and not so new normal. For myself and everybody else the ground has shifted. My new collection of satirical prints are for our time.” \nChris Orr 2022 \n\nCARON PENNEY\nPenney studied Constructed Textiles at Middlesex University\, graduating with a BA (Hons) degree. After working as a professional weaver\, Director and Consultant for twenty-two years\, in 2013 she opened her own studio. In 2021 Penney moved to the Barlavington Estate near Petworth. She has been featured in House & Garden magazine in November 2017 and Crafts Magazine in July/Aug 2018. Penney was a selected artist for the Royal Academy of Arts\, Summer Exhibition in 2014 and 2020 and has exhibited widely. Penney was a selected maker for Collect Open\, curated by the Crafts Council for the Collect Art Fair 2022. \nPenney uses the same limited range of materials traditionally used to make handwoven tapestry\, worsted wool and gilt gold threads\, with the addition of dyed cotton warp which edge the finely woven pieces. She has a deep understanding of hand woven tapestry techniques and her resulting tapestries continue to be embraced by the training she acquired as a professional weaver. She uses this knowledge to teach tapestry at numerous locations\, from Central Saint Martin‘s to Morley College. As a professional weaver she currently helps the artist and musician Martin Creed to realise his tapestry artwork.

SUMMARY:Frank Auerbach: Unseen at Newlands House Gallery
DESCRIPTION:2 APRIL –  14 AUGUST 2022 \nWednesday – Saturday 10am-5pm \nSunday 11am-4pm \nNewlands House Gallery will celebrate the renowned German-British artist Frank Auerbach with an exhibition of works spanning over 60 years of his prolific career \nBook Tickets \n\n\nOpening 2nd April\, Newlands House Gallery presents ‘Frank Auerbach: Unseen’ that will explore the evolution of the contemporary painter’s practice with a collection of over 65 works\, including nine paintings\, etchings\, drawings and Drypoint prints. Presented within Newlands House Gallery’s Georgian building in the historic town of Petworth\, on display will be works spanning from the 1950s to present day that portray Auerbach as a tireless creator\, while reflecting on the influences and relationships that have informed his striking style. A collection of works by the artist\, on loan from the Tate\, will also be displayed together for the first time in 30 years. \nFrank Auerbach (b.1931) is renowned for his resonant figurative works that are defined by rich texture and depth. Auerbach’s works are created by a relentless process of painting a canvas before scraping away to start again\, which is a technique that he undertakes multiple times to complete works in one sitting. Frank Auerbach: Unseen will unravel the development of this unique practice with a large collection of works presented chronologically\, including loans from the National Gallery\, Tate\, and Fitzwilliam Museum. \nThe exhibition will offer an intimate insight into Auerbach’s career and begins with the artist’s portraits of close friends including Lucian Freud\, Leon Kossoff and a large oil painting of Estelle Stella Olive West (E.O.W) – a frequent female model for the artist. Early etchings dating to the 1950s drawn by Auerbach at art school\, will stand alongside later works by a matured Auerbach in the 1980s. These capture the intense experience of sitting for an artist with an indefatigable practice like Auerbach’s. Etchings of his wife\, Julia\, depict her reclining form\, while the thickly layered paint on Head of E.O.W I (1960)\, is indicative of the length of time Auerbach spent overpainting this work. \nThe influence of Auerbach’s important relationships with the Old Masters that preceded him and a discreet collector\, David Wilke\, will also be examined. Wilke’s collection of commissioned paintings will be on display together for the first time in 30 years since bequeathed to the Tate in 1993. This includes Auerbach’s renowned oil paintings of Bacchus and Ariadne (1971)\, based on Titian’s classical work\, and Rimbaud (1975-6) that depicts the 19th century French poet in the Cornaro Chapel\, Rome. This work is the result of the pair’s playful relationship upheld between the art-admirer and artist. Auerbach denied Wilke’s initial request to paint Bernini’s ‘Ecstasy of St Teresa’ in the Roman chapel yet responded by transplanting Rimbaud into the setting for this later commission. \nBook Tickets in advance here.

SUMMARY:Great Railway Stations - Art Society Talk
DESCRIPTION:5 APRIL 2022 \n2.00pm – 3.30pm \nIf you think of St Pancras International or New York Grand Central you imagine long romantic journeys. You know they are special places promising excitement and adventure. But there are dozens of other glorious stations in the UK and abroad. We will take a journey around some of the most evocative and splendid stations in the world. We will look not only at the magnificence of the architecture and the brilliant engineering but will discover numerous artworks within the stations and examine many depictions of stations in art – like Claude Monet’s Gare St Lazare or William Powell Frith’s Paddington. It may sound a bit anoraky\, but it’s definitely not. It’s lavish\, colourful and fun. \nIan Swankie is a Londoner with a passion for art and architecture\, he is an official guide at Tate Modern\, Tate Britain\, Guildhall Art Gallery and St Paul’s Cathedral\, and gives tours around each venue. He is also a qualified and active freelance London guide and leads regular tours for various corporations and organisations. SUMMARY:Ukraine - Helping Refugees
DESCRIPTION:13 APRIL 2022 \n7.00pm – 9.00pm \n\n\n\nAre you like us?\nWant to help with the Ukrainian Refugee Crisis but not sure how? \nCome and join us to find out more. \nWednesday 13th April at Tillington Village Hall at 7pm \nA group of us at All Hallows really want to respond to the huge needs arising out of the appalling war in Ukraine. Some have offered space in their homes\, but most of us can’t. \nThe needs of these traumatised people will require a whole community response. A group of caring\, committed and resourceful people will be essential to meet the needs of any refugees that may come to this area. \nTo that end\, we wanted to meet up\, to discover who might want to be involved\, what skills and experience there might be among us\, what we might be able to do together. \nWe have\, as yet\, no idea if Tillington will be judged a suitable place for refugee families\, as Phase 2 of the Government’s plans to welcome refugees hasn’t begun. \nThere are plenty of resources out there to train and inform Community Support groups\, and the Sanctuary Foundation is a good website to explore. www.sanctuaryfoundation.org.uk \n\n\nPlease come along and let’s see together what we might need to do if we want to play our part. We are all on a learning curve!\nWednesday 13 th April 7pm at Tillington Village Hall

SUMMARY:Happy Birthday To Us! Our Taproom’s 1st Birthday Celebrations
DESCRIPTION:16 APRIL 2022 \n5.00pm – 10.00pm \n\nIt’s a very happy birthday to us!\nOur taproom is a year old today (Saturday 16th April) and we’ll be celebrating with live music from Wavy Davy and friends\, a hog roast\, plus BBQ loaded chips\, via our friends at Simply Hog Roast (delicious veggie options available) and a well-stocked\, award-winning bar.\nWe’ll have games available – cornhole and bar skittles – face painting and Easter egg hunts.\nWhy not join us? We’d love to welcome you and your families and friends.\nThis is a free-to-enjoy event\, but we’ll be collecting for the David Nott Foundation. Please do bring your loose change (and notes) to donate to this extremely worth-while cause.\n\n\nOver the weekend of 4th\, 5th & 6th March\, David Nott\, the founder of the foundation\, trained 579 Ukrainian doctors\, a crash course of twelve hours\, teaching them the essential skills they will need to cope with the injuries being sustained by both fighters and civilians in this hellish war.\nThe training courses are highly specialised and David is the world’s most experienced trauma surgeon. The foundation has led training courses worldwide and saved millions of lives through the snowball effect\, as the surgeons then go on to train others and so on. \nMore details of the work can be found on the David Nott Foundation website above\, and we also recommend listening on Radio 4 catch up to David on Desert Island Discs\, 2016. \n\n\nPlease do check back too\, as we’ll add further details about our happy birthday to us celebrations soon.

Saint George is believed to have been a Roman soldier who hailed from Cappadocia\, in modern day Turkey\, and who died a martyr’s death in Roman Palestine in A.D. 303. He is said to have been tortured and then beheaded during the persecution under Emperor Diocletian.\nMany legends revolve around Saint George. He is credited with undergoing almost every type of torture that you can name and also with dying and coming back to life three times before being beheaded. And his legends and great popularity have made Saint George the patron saint not only of England but of about a dozen nations and regions in total.\nSaint George’s Day is dated on 23 April as that is supposed to be the day of his martyrdom.
