SUMMARY:Frank Auerbach: Unseen at Newlands House Gallery
DESCRIPTION:2 APRIL –  14 AUGUST 2022 \nWednesday – Saturday 10am-5pm \nSunday 11am-4pm \nNewlands House Gallery will celebrate the renowned German-British artist Frank Auerbach with an exhibition of works spanning over 60 years of his prolific career \nBook Tickets \n\n\nOpening 2nd April\, Newlands House Gallery presents ‘Frank Auerbach: Unseen’ that will explore the evolution of the contemporary painter’s practice with a collection of over 65 works\, including nine paintings\, etchings\, drawings and Drypoint prints. Presented within Newlands House Gallery’s Georgian building in the historic town of Petworth\, on display will be works spanning from the 1950s to present day that portray Auerbach as a tireless creator\, while reflecting on the influences and relationships that have informed his striking style. A collection of works by the artist\, on loan from the Tate\, will also be displayed together for the first time in 30 years. \nFrank Auerbach (b.1931) is renowned for his resonant figurative works that are defined by rich texture and depth. Auerbach’s works are created by a relentless process of painting a canvas before scraping away to start again\, which is a technique that he undertakes multiple times to complete works in one sitting. Frank Auerbach: Unseen will unravel the development of this unique practice with a large collection of works presented chronologically\, including loans from the National Gallery\, Tate\, and Fitzwilliam Museum. \nThe exhibition will offer an intimate insight into Auerbach’s career and begins with the artist’s portraits of close friends including Lucian Freud\, Leon Kossoff and a large oil painting of Estelle Stella Olive West (E.O.W) – a frequent female model for the artist. Early etchings dating to the 1950s drawn by Auerbach at art school\, will stand alongside later works by a matured Auerbach in the 1980s. These capture the intense experience of sitting for an artist with an indefatigable practice like Auerbach’s. Etchings of his wife\, Julia\, depict her reclining form\, while the thickly layered paint on Head of E.O.W I (1960)\, is indicative of the length of time Auerbach spent overpainting this work. \nThe influence of Auerbach’s important relationships with the Old Masters that preceded him and a discreet collector\, David Wilke\, will also be examined. Wilke’s collection of commissioned paintings will be on display together for the first time in 30 years since bequeathed to the Tate in 1993. This includes Auerbach’s renowned oil paintings of Bacchus and Ariadne (1971)\, based on Titian’s classical work\, and Rimbaud (1975-6) that depicts the 19th century French poet in the Cornaro Chapel\, Rome. This work is the result of the pair’s playful relationship upheld between the art-admirer and artist. Auerbach denied Wilke’s initial request to paint Bernini’s ‘Ecstasy of St Teresa’ in the Roman chapel yet responded by transplanting Rimbaud into the setting for this later commission. \nBook Tickets in advance here.

SUMMARY:Summer Exhibition: Painting and Sculpture at Moncrieff Bray Gallery
DESCRIPTION:6 MAY – 13 AUGUST 2022 \nWe have extended the Summer Exhibition until the 13th August and the gallery is open every Friday and Saturday until then. Our opening times are 10-4pm and at other times by appointment.  \n50 artists and sculptors selected from Land’s End to Ullapool.  \nNew work by some of our best-loved artists are shown alongside exciting new talents throughout the gallery and blossoming landscaped gardens. \nThe Moncrieff-Bray Gallery presents its Summer Exhibition which takes place in our converted barn and landscaped gardens with stunning views over the Rother Valley. Over 50 artists and sculptors are drawn from all corners of the British Isles. The work is selected with a commitment to quality\, integrity and originality from established and emerging artists alike. Sculpture ranges from small-scale intimate works for interiors to stunning large pieces for the garden. Established 17 years ago\, the Summer Exhibition has become a highlight in the West Sussex art calendar. \nNew work by some of our best-loved artists such as John Hitchens\, Jilly Sutton and Oona Campbell\, are shown alongside exciting new talent\, including Michael Chaikin’s giant articulated fish which ‘swim’  in the wind\, and Jeremy Moulsdale’s lyrical figures. \nWe are proud to show work by many leading British contemporary stone carvers\, among them: Jonathan Loxley\, Paul Vanstone\, Dominic Welch\, Guy Stevens\, Aly Brown and Tim Pomeroy. Complementing these pieces are Mike Savage’s organic pod forms in beaten copper\, Jilly Sutton’s striking carved wooden heads\, and kinetic works by Will Carr and Michael Chaikin. \nWithin the gallery\, vibrant work by Scottish Colourists Jean B Martin and Ann Oram are complimented by sweeping landscapes of the South Downs by Rosie Copeland and Lucy Marks. Gareth Edward’s elegiac abstract landscape is contrasted with the dynamic abstraction of Spencer Shakespeare and Malcom Taylor. \nThis is an exhibition which celebrates many of the finest aspects of contemporary British art. This\, combined with its spectacular rural setting\, only five minutes from the antique and artistic hub of Petworth\, make it a unique destination.

SUMMARY:Silver Spitfire: The Longest Flight (Chichester Film Festival)
DESCRIPTION:17 AUGUST 2022 \n5.00pm – 6.30pm \n\nA British expeditionary team attempt a dangerous\, world-first circumnavigation of the Earth in an 80-year-old vintage World War II fighter to inspire a new generation through the freedom of flight.\nLooking for new ways to pass on the heritage of our liberty\, pilots Matt Jones and Steve Brooks embark on a daring expedition with a small team to do something no one has ever done before. What they discover in the skies that connect our World unlocks lessons about ourselves\, home and the fragility and beauty of freedom through G-IRTY\, an iconic interceptor aircraft that battled for liberty against the Nazi regime. This beautiful record of the entire expedition spanning 26 countries – something seldom achieved\, let alone from low altitude -was shot over the four months of the odyssey. It provides a snapshot of the World and its cultures in the present day whilst remembering our past. Human and machine form an emotional bond\, filled with ghosts of our past\, as together they continue the story she started telling in the 1940s. The aerial vistas\, breath-taking\, as the Silver Spitfire soars and roars from Europe to North America\, Russia\, Asia\, Arabia and back again\, chasing the sun westward. An immersive portrait\, brimming with danger\, drama and heart-wrenching emotion\, the film takes you inside one of the most special machines ever created\, reflecting the World and ourselves in her silvery\, glistening wings. It provides a snapshot of the World and its cultures in the present day whilst remembering our past.\n\n\nDirector: Benjamin Uttley\nWriter: Benjamin Uttley \nStars: Matt Jones\, Lachlan Monro\, Ian Smith \nRunning time: 1hr 29mins \nCertificate: U \n\n\nDoors open 30 minutes before film starts.
