SUMMARY:Swan Lake (ROH Live)
DESCRIPTION:1 APRIL 2020 \n7.15pm – 10.45pm \nLive from Royal Opera House\nPart of our 2019/20 Live Cinema Season\, streamed simultaneously from the ROH to our cinema screen and in full surround sound.\n\nStory\nPrince Siegfried chances upon a flock of swans while out hunting. When one of the swans turns into a beautiful woman\, Odette\, he is enraptured. But she is under a spell that holds her captive\, allowing her to regain her human form only at night.\n\nThe evil spirit Von Rothbart\, arbiter of Odette’s curse\, disguises his daughter Odile as Odette to trick Siegfried into breaking his vow of love. Fooled\, Siegfried declares his love for Odile\, and so dooms Odette to suffer under the curse forever.\n\nBackground\nLiam Scarlett’s glorious production of Swan Lake\, new in 2018\, returns for its first revival. While remaining faithful to the Marius Petipa/Lev Ivanov text\, Scarlett’s additional choreography and John Macfarlane’s magnificent designs breathe new life into what is arguably the best-known and most-loved classical ballet. The entire Company shines in this eternal tale of doomed love\, a masterpiece refreshed for a new generation. Tchaikovsky’s first score for ballet soars with its symphonic sweep and combines perfectly with exquisite choreography from the grand pas de deux of Prince Siegfried and Odile to the swans at the lakeside. An intoxicating mix of spectacle and intimate passion\, the overall effect is irresistible.\n\nTickets £16.50 in advance (including booking fee)\nPlease arrive at least 15 mins before the performance begins.\n\nApproximate running time: 3 hours

SUMMARY:Cavalleria rusticana / Pagliacci (ROH Live)
DESCRIPTION:21 APRIL 2020 \n7.00pm – 10.00pm \nLive from Royal Opera House\nPart of our 2019/20 Live Cinema Season\, streamed simultaneously from the ROH to our cinema screen and in full surround sound.\n\nStory\nTwo opera classics are drawn together in this wonderfully observed re-creation of life in a south Italian village as a travelling theatre visits and emotions erupt. The award-winning production by Damiano Michieletto presents vividly the fast-moving\, shocking events brought about by secret love and uncontrollable jealousy. The music is full of Italianate melody in the great choruses that bring the villagers together in celebration and revelry\, alongside the solo arias and tense confrontations that provoke violence and tragedy.\n\nBackground\nPietro Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana (Rustic Chivalry) and Ruggero Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci (The Players) are today Italian opera’s most famous double act\, but they were written independently. Cavalleria rusticana came first\, its hugely successful premiere in 1890 doubtless an influence on Leoncavallo. His Pagliacci in 1892 was another triumph. The two works\, each undeniable masterpieces of the verismo tradition of realism\, share dramatic concision\, melodic richness and an obsession with violent jealousy.\n\nDamiano Michieletto’s production was an Olivier-Award-winning hit when first presented in 2015. He sets both operas within the same village\, allowing characters from one piece to reappear in the other and offering theatrical realism within visuals that are modern and yet timeless. The production was widely praised at its premiere\, and summarized by the Financial Times as ‘a gripping evening all round’.\n\nTickets £16.50 in advance (includes booking fee)\nPlease arrive at least 15 mins before the performance begins.\n\nApproximate running time: 3 hours

SUMMARY:The Arts Society West Sussex - Turner vs Constable : The Great British Paint Off!
DESCRIPTION:5 MAY 2020 \n2.00pm – 3.00pm \nThis is the story of the epic rivalry between the two giants of British art\, J.M.W. Turner and John Constable. This lecture/study day sets them head-to-head and examines their differences\, their similarities\, their battles and their shared triumphs. But who will ultimately be crowned star painter? SUMMARY:The Arts Society West Sussex - A BRIEF STORY OF WINE
DESCRIPTION:2 JUNE 2020 \n2.00pm – 3.00pm \nWine has been part of our global society for over 7\,000 years\, and the story tells of its origin and appearance in all societies across the Mediterranean and through Europe. There is rich evidence of the role wine has played in these societies and how it became an important component of faith\, well-being and festivity. From the kwevris of Georgia in 5\,000 B.C.\, the symposia in ancient Greece\, the thermopolia of Pompeii\, the hospices of Europe\, to the dining tables of fine society wine has been ever present. Drawings\, paintings\, engravings\, buildings\, pottery and wine labels themselves all contribute to the story. \nPresented by David Wright \n\n\n\n\n\nWebsite

SUMMARY:The Arts Society West Sussex - MAD MEN AND ARTISTS
DESCRIPTION:6 OCTOBER 2020 \n2.00pm – 3.00pm \nFine art has provided advertisers and their agencies with a great deal of material to use in their creative campaigns. Tony describes some of the processes by which these advertisements have been created and why the works of Leonardo da Vinci\, Raphael and Michelangelo have been a particularly rich source. From the Renaissance through to the present day fine art continues to provide opportunities to enhance Brand imagery with admiration\, humour\, satire and irony. In an entertaining and informative lecture Tony uses a wide range of visuals and video to show examples of the original works\, the creative process and the (not always entirely successful) advertisements that are the end result. \nPresented by Tony Rawlins \n \n\n\n\n\n\nWebsite
