SUMMARY:Petworth Festival Literary Week
DESCRIPTION:30 OCTOBER – 7 NOVEMBER 2021 \nVarious Times \nWith just a few days to go before the opening of this year’s Literary Week\, the entire team is in place to usher in a superb week during which we will be meeting a treasure trove of fascinating authors speaking about a genuinely kaleidoscopic range of subjects. Having the likes of Alison Weir talking in person about Henry VIII’s Queens; Prof A C Grayling about The Frontiers of Knowledge; Hamish de Bretton-Gordon about his extraordinary\, death-defying exploits as a chemical and biological weapons expert; Dr Tessa Dunlop about the enduring legacy of the women who were a crucial part of the second world war effort; Prof Christina Riggs about the glories of the Tutankhamun treasures and their wider cultural legacy; and Sebastian Faulks\, Jeffrey Archer and Jeremy Vine about their latest novels\, it should be clear that we are about to be spoiled for choice over the coming nine days. \nWe do hope you will join us in person. The majority of the events are in St Mary’s Church this year where we trust everyone will feel comfortable with the levels of ventilation. If you would prefer to watch online\, that option of course is available and will remain so until Sunday 28 November \n*all events held in St Mary’s Petworth will be streamed live online and available to view on demand for three weeks after the event.

SUMMARY:Autumn Exhibition at Moncrieff Bray Gallery
DESCRIPTION:5 NOVEMBER – 24 DECEMBER \nOpening Weekend Friday 5th\, Saturday 6th\, and Sunday 7th November\, 10 am–5 pm \nFrom 10th November to 18th December: open Wednesday to Saturday\, 10 am–4 pm \nOn Thursday 23rd & Friday 24th December: open 10 am–4 pm \nOver 30 artists and sculptors from across the UK. \nThe Moncrieff-Bray Gallery presents its Autumn Exhibition\, which takes place in our converted barn and landscaped gardens with stunning views over the Rother Valley. Both the sculpture and the art respond and reflect the landscape. From the playful animal sculptures of Adam Binder to the sweeping sublimity of John Hitchens’ landscapes\, Moncrieff-Bray’s artists have a relationship with the organic and the natural. Artists and sculptors are drawn from all corners of the British Isles and work is selected with a commitment to quality\, integrity\, and originality from both established and emerging artists. \nWe are showing some new pieces from some of our long-standing artists. Diana Tonnison’s ceramics\, feature boxes filled with ceramic fruit\, vegetables\, and fish. We are also excited to be exhibiting a selection of John Hitchens’ Scottish work. Painted in the late 1960s and early 1970s\, they demonstrate Hitchens’ earlier approach to landscape painting\, with an emphasis on wide landscapes and dramatic skies. \nThe exhibition sees several exciting new artists to the gallery\, among them West Country artists David Mankin\,Paul Riley\, Elizabeth Hough\, and Sarah Bowman. The swing and flux of the Cornish landscape inform Mankin’s expressionistic abstract paintings. Inspired by the St Ives School\, Sarah Bowman’s distant landscapes are viewed through foreground windows\, framing the developing narrative of a distant view. \nIn the garden\, work by leading British contemporary stone carvers Paul Vanstone\, Dominic Welch\, and Aly Brown – all successful participants at the prestigious ‘On Form’ exhibition at Astall Manor – will lead the way.  Inside the gallery we will be featuring new work from Adam Binder\, Emma Maiden and Jason Mulligan.

SUMMARY:Julian Opie: Collected Works/Works Collected at Newlands House Gallery
DESCRIPTION:6 NOVEMBER 2021 –  6 MARCH 2022 \n \nWednesday – Saturday 10am-5pm \nSunday 11am-4pm \n\n\n\n\nOpening 6 November\, Newlands House Gallery presents Julian Opie: Collected Works/Works Collected\, showcasing over 100 objects from the contemporary British artist’s personal collection\, ranging from the ancient world to the present day\, alongside a selection of his own sculptures\, paintings and films. Presented in the historic market town of Petworth in Newlands House Gallery’s Georgian building\, the exhibition offers a unique opportunity for visitors to see how Opie’s interests and journey as a collector\, inform the art he makes himself. \nJulian Opie is internationally recognised for his distinctive and refined drawing style\, distilling the visual information of our everyday reality to a universal language of symbols and signs\, reflecting his preoccupation with the idea of representation\, and the means by which images are perceived and understood. A wide range of techniques are visible throughout Opie’s work – from cutting-edge LCD technology to mosaic\, beadwork and engraved stone – and are presented here in dialogue with the artworks that have inspired them. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOpie writes: “Spookily often\, when I am stuck for decisions\, I get up and look at some other art and find a solution right there. The work of others pushes me beyond what I know and assume\, it suggests new logics and approaches and makes me feel not so alone in this strange endeavour.” \nIn a multifarious and dynamic display\, the exhibition includes Ancient Greek and Roman statuary\, Egyptian sarcophagi\, Japanese Ukiyo-e woodblocks\, beaded sun hats\, armour and Indonesian ancestral figures\, alongside original manga sketches from Studio Ghibli and contemporary works by\, amongst others\, Kara Walker\, Chuck Close\, Roy Lichtenstein and Sol LeWitt. \nCarefully curated within the architecture and domestic space of Newlands House Gallery\, the exhibition also provides an intimate visual map of Opie’s interior world. The works are not organised chronologically\, instead they are curated to reflect the inquisitive mind of the artist; everyday scenes of Japanese women by Kitagawa Utamaro are positioned alongside Opie’s animated LCD portrait Ruth smoking 2 (2006); Augustin Edouart’s silhouette portraits of Victorian families are presented together with Opie’s own silhouettes from 2010\, depicting both his own family and friends and The Gallery Staff; in the garden\, recent metal sculptures Deer 2 and Dog 4 (2020) are installed alongside Yoko XIX (2006) by Don Brown. Opie’s portrait paintings and 3D sculpture are shown together with old Master paintings by Joshua Reynolds and a variety of helmets meant both for recreation and battle. These unconventional combinations offer in insight into his ongoing artistic endeavour\, steeped in the visual and material languages of the past; a conversation spanning hundreds and thousands of years and continuing on into the future. \nNewlands House is a new gallery inspired by the historic associations of Petworth and Sussex with great artists\, writers and designers from times past. It seeks to reinvigorate this legacy with the vitality of modern and contemporary art and design shaping contemporary culture. In the intimacy of a converted home\, Newlands House sits at the centre of Sussex’s burgeoning cultural scene\, spanning museums\, art centres\, festivals\, vineyards\, nature trails and stately homes. In 2020\, the gallery opened to great acclaim with two inaugural exhibitions\, a tribute to Helmut Newton and a survey of top works by designer\, architect and artist Ron Arad. Set in the heart of the South Downs\, Newlands House invites visitors to engage with the work of the greatest artists in an unexpected\, Georgian setting\, contrasting to white cube environments the art historical canon is predominantly presented in.

SUMMARY:Handel’s Messiah to be Performed at St Mary’s Church Petworth
DESCRIPTION:20 NOVEMBER 2021 \n7:30pm – 9:45pm \nFernhurst Choral Society\, under its talented Musical Director Tim Ravalde\, will perform George Frideric Handel’s Messiah. The concert is at 7.30pm on Saturday 20th November at St Mary’s Church\, Petworth. \nTickets are available at £15 from www.fernhurstchoralsociety.org.uk\, the Fernhurst Hub\, the Ticket Manager\, Tel: 01730 815708 or at the concert door. Entry is free for NUS cardholders and accompanied under 18s. \nThis performance is the first of the Society’s 2021-22 concert season following a COVID enforced absence of nearly 2 years. “We believe Messiah is the perfect choice to mark the Society’s triumphant return to public performance. Full of famous tunes\, it represents the high point of the 18th century collision of sacred music and opera”\, Society Chair\, Nigel Roberts said. \nMessiah was composed with a scriptural text from the King James Bible and Psalms from the Book of Common Prayer. It was first performed in Dublin in 1742. After an initially modest public reception\, the oratorio gained in popularity\, eventually becoming one of the best-known and most frequently performed choral works in Western music.  “Come and hear the choir and four fabulous soloists deliver what promises to be a thoroughly enjoyable\, uplifting and joyous performance” said Musical Director\, Tim Ravalde. \nAll audience members will be requested to wear a face covering when in the venue.
