SUMMARY:Two Worlds Entwined: Annie Morris and Idris Khan at Newlands House Gallery
DESCRIPTION:11 FEBRUARY – 4 JUNE 2023 \nWednesday – Saturday 10am-5pm \nSunday 11am-4pm \nOur current Exhibition\, Two Worlds Entwined: Annie Morris and Idris Khan has been extended to the 4th June Book tickets\n\n\nThe artist couple’s work side by side for the first time in the U.K. \n‘Two Worlds Entwined: Annie Morris and Idris Khan’ will explore the artistic practices of Annie Morris and Idris Khan within the historic and intimate setting of Newlands House gallery. \nArtist Annie Morris’s multi-disciplinary practice draws on both personal experience and the history of art to create works of art noted for their energetic\, electric nature. Idris Khan\, drawing inspiration from the history of art and music as well as key philosophical and theological texts\, investigates memory\, creativity\, and the layering of experience. \nAn artist couple\, Annie and Idris were married in Dordogne in 2009. The exhibition will present\, for the first time in the UK\, the practice of this highly successful couple side by side\, exploring the relationship present in the works as the artists each looks inwardly and outwardly to find their inspiration and voice as they experience life together and filter it through their unique and distinct practices. \nThe show will transform Newlands House into the creative realm of Annie and Idris\, presenting both new works and historic pieces. Playful yet contemplative\, audiences will be invited to fall into the colours\, words\, thoughts\, and emotions stirred by the artworks and experience the atmosphere the couple conjures in their work. Bold and dynamic\, the contrast of the contemporary with the historic rooms of the gallery will provide a new context for the art\, one which mimics the familiar space of the home. \nTickets:  \nGeneral Admission (16 years and over): £14.50 \nChild Admission\, under 10 years is free. 10 years to 16 years: £7.25 \nNHS Staff £7.25 (ID required) \nStudents £7.25 (ID required) \nFamily ticket: (2 Adults + 2 Children): £30.00 \nNewlands House Gallery Pass £99.00 (free entry for the card member plus one guest for a year and 10% off at the HG Café. SUMMARY:Chris Simmons Live (Music)
DESCRIPTION:1 APRIL 2023 \n8.00pm – 11.00pm \n\nAn artist who commands comparisons to an ostensibly motley crew of musicians such as Brett Anderson\, Neil Finn and Paul McCartney is bound to stop listeners in their tracks. Indeed\, an artist who’s gained the direct support of heavy hitters like Chris Difford of Squeeze and the legendary Jackson Browne\, in turn\, deserves some serious attention. Meet Chris Simmons.\n“A breath of fresh air. This young man is going to be very big indeed” THE TIMES\n“A truly great songwriter with an incredibly distinctive voice” JACKSON BROWNE\nAfter teasing the music pundits with a host of laudable openers\, a roster of punch packing support slots and headline shows of his own\, Simmons proved that he had an affect on those keen to know who was worth watching – and rightly so.\nHaving toured with fellow Brightonian Passenger\, Chris Simmons has played a litany of British festivals including Glastonbury and the Isle of Wight Festival\, opened for Australia’s Matt Corby\, and flown the English and Trans-Atlantic support flag for the likes of James Bay\, Kate Nash and Suzanne Vega. Continuing his love for playing house concerts across Europe over the last handful of years also\, if there’s one thing Simmons does without question\, it’s staying true his incredible energy for performance and sustaining his effortless output.\n“The Deepest Wound is up there with the greatest melancholic works\, such as Jeff Buckley’s rendition of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah..”- METRO\nAfter being invited on another string of shows with Passenger\, Chris was invited to tour the UK with Supergrass legend Gaz Coombes\, before embarking on his own sold run of headline shows\, taking in his favourite parts of the UK and Europe\, to great acclaim.\n“Simmons’ voice can climb to Cat Stevens heights or dive down deep into Nick Drake darkness\, but no matter where he’s singing from\, he employs the kind of heart-stopping finesse that could transform a crowded room into a reverent hush in seconds….his songs are redolent with heart\, grace and the kind of phrasing that evokes everyone from Neil Finn to David Gray”- STEREO EMBERS\n“Superb!”- BBC SCOTLAND\n“Beautifully ambitious. One to watch” TIME OUT\n“Seriously one to watch.” MUSIC WEEK\nIn the summer of 2021\, Chris was invited on tour by none other than the great Sir Tom Jones after impressing in a one-off show\, standing in last minute for another act. Simmons went on to play and captivate a string of stadiums opening for Sir Tom\, just one man and an acoustic guitar.\nChris returned with the huge summer single ‘Home’ in 2022\, a driving and powerful dedication to love and sanctuary\, wherever we can find it. He hit the road again through the summer opening for Paloma Faith\, Badly Drawn Boy and was tour support for the legendary Simply Red.\n2023 is jam packed full of releases and shows for Chris. A spring tour of India and the UK tour is the prelude for a very busy year\, one that will see Simmons star shine brighter than ever.\nDoors: 7.30pm\nPerformance: 8.00pm
