SUMMARY:The Arts Society West Sussex - Oscar Wilde: Up Close
DESCRIPTION:2 March 2021\n\n2.00pm – 3.00pm\n\n \nPRESENTED BY GILES RAMSAY\n“I put all my genius into my life; I put only my talent into my works.” \nI examine the public and private life of one of the world’s most original and controversial artists. Born into a moderately respectable Dublin family Oscar Wilde recreated himself as an international celebrity and wrote a series of short stories and plays that charmed the world. In 1890 he also published the last of the great myths – The Picture of Dorian Gray. Ten years later Wilde\, devoured by his fame\, his demons and his decadence\, would be dead. \nGiles Ramsay is an independent theatre director and producer who specialises in creating new work with artists in developing countries. He is the Founding Director of the charity Developing Artists (www.developingartists.org)\, a Fellow of St. Chad’s College\, Durham University and Course Leader in Theatre at The Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Giles has run theatre projects in Botswana\, Cape Verde\, Equatorial Guinea\, Kenya\, Kosovo\, Palestine\, Mexico\, Thailand and Zimbabwe and given numerous talks for institutions ranging from The Foundation for Mexican Literature in Mexico City to The Royal College of Physicians in London. He regularly lectures on the history and practice of theatre on the Queen Mary 2 as it sails from New York to the UK. Giles combines academic analysis with hands on experience to bring a unique insight to the world of the theatre. \nPLEASE NOTE!\nWhilst Covid-19 restrictions are in force our Talks will be delivered via Zoom at our usual meeting time\, that is to say\, at 2:00pm on the 1st Tuesday of the Month. We will email all members with the link to join these Talks in the week before they are due to take place. SUMMARY:The Arts Society West Sussex - The Tate Modern-” More than just a pile of bricks
DESCRIPTION:6 APRIL 2021\n\n2.00pm – 3.00pm \n\nPRESENTED BY IAN SWANKIE\nThe Tate Modern originally opened in 2000 but in June 2016 opened its doors to the stunning new Blavatnik Building\, immediately setting the new gold standard for museum design. This talk looks at the sleek new architecture and its engagement with the local environment and then follows the highlights of the collection\, starting with Monet\, Matisse and Picasso\, continuing through the 20th century artists such as Bacon\, Freud and Epstein and on to some international recent works. Some are easy to explain\, and some are quite challenging. Some are profound\, some are witty\, some are whacky\, but they all have a place. \nIan Swankie  is an official guide at Tate Modern\, Tate Britain\, Guildhall Art Gallery and St Paul’s Cathedral\, and gives tours around each venue. He is also a qualified and active freelance London guide and leads regular tours for various corporations and organisations. Since 2012 he has led a popular weekly independent art lecture group in his home town of Richmond in West London. He is a Freeman of the Worshipful Company of Art Scholars\, one of the City livery companies. \nPLEASE NOTE!\nWhilst Covid-19 restrictions are in force our Talks will be delivered via Zoom at our usual meeting time\, that is to say\, at 2:00pm on the 1st Tuesday of the Month. SUMMARY:Joan Miró. la Gran Belleza At Newlands House Gallery
DESCRIPTION:1st MAY –  4th JULY \nOne of the twentieth century’s most celebrated artists\, Joan Miró’s magical universe is explored in this intimate exhibition spanning 50 years of creative production. \nJoan Miró i Ferrà (Barcelona\, 1893 – Palma de Mallorca\, 1983) is one of the twentieth century’s most celebrated artists\, whose influence and legacy continues to be ever-present in our times today. Painter\, sculptor and ceramicist\, his lifelong playful flirtation with abstraction and geometry have secured his place in the pantheon of art history. \nAvoiding categorisation\, neither cubist\, surrealist nor abstract artist\, this exhibition aims to take a journey through more than 50 years of the artist’s creative production. The tour begins in 1931\, with a small figurative painting in which one can identify the beginning of that unique visual language characteristic of Miró. It ends in 1981 with a series of engravings that boast the wealth of his creative universe. The exhibition features his paintings\, sculptures\, engravings\, and drawings\, presenting the progression of his style as he ‘honed in’ on his artistic voice. This survey show is an intimate walk-through Miró’s colourful career. \n\n\n\n\n \nNewlands House\, \nPound Street\,\nPetworth\, \nWest Sussex\, \nGU28 0DX \n01798 65 1002 \nenquiries@newlandshouse.gallery \nRESERVATION \nWednesday – Saturday 10am-5pm \nSunday 11am-4pm \nStudent concessions \nAvailable Weds – Fri

This lecture examines their ‘signature’ paints; how they overcame the ‘technical challenge’ of sketching from nature and how their differing approaches fared in the competitive arena of the Royal Academy. \n Nicola is an independent art historian specialising in British art of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. She studied at the University of York and Birkbeck College\, London. Formerly a curator at Tate Britain she has curated a number of exhibitions and has published widely on J.M.W. Turner\, including contributions to the forthcoming online catalogue of the Turner Bequest. She is also co-editor and author of How to Paint Like Turner (Tate Publishing\, 2010). Visitors are welcome to join these Talks for the normal visitors fee of £5 per Talk\, if you wish to join as a visitor please lets us know using the Contact Us form on this website

SUMMARY:Simon Hitchen - Trace at Kevis House Gallery
DESCRIPTION:19 MAY – 30 JUNE \n10.00am  – 5.00pm \nTrace: The track left by a moving pen following a line back to its origin – a minimal mark of something having existed. \nChance and rhythm. Order and chaos \n \nSIMON HITCHENS \nTrace – artist statement \nAs a sculptor\, my practice is multi-disciplinary: working through a variety of mediums as well as drawing\, painting and film in order to explore and execute my ideas. I work on large-scale public sculpture commissions where the work is concerned with specifics of place whilst retaining the integrity of my own sculptural voice. At the same time\, I push ideas within my studio practice through research and investigation where I experiment with materials and concepts: this is the core of my practice\, part of which has led to this particular body of drawings – Deconstructing Wholeness. \nDrawing often enables me to clarify my concepts before I commit to exploring them further\, or sometimes acts as a deciphering tool after I have finished a sculpture. Drawing can also act as a touchstone to the more instinctive side of my practice. It acts as a bridge between my conscious thoughts and my subconscious. I often work in series\, searching out abstract feelings akin to navigating through a foggy landscape. \nThe starting point for the drawings in this exhibition\, are the shadows cast from stones local to my studio environment. In these drawings I have set up a system of prescribed rules where my hand becomes an objective tool to create the drawing and I let the system run until it is complete. I am not focused on an end result before I start\, instead I relax into the meditative actions needed for the completion of the task. The titles Deconstructing \nWholeness are descriptive of my actions and perceptions of humble stones which most individuals would overlook. My aim is to discover different ways to perceive rock\, this most ubiquitous of Earth’s materials. \nThe natural world is an endless source of inspiration to me\, and a direct tool I use to create my work. Rock is the material focus and conceptual back bone to my creative practice. By drawing it\, I attempt to deepen my understanding of the interconnectedness between the human and the non-human\, as a means of understanding our relationship with impermanence.
