SUMMARY:The Petworth Park Antiques & Fine Art Fair
DESCRIPTION:16 – 18 MAY 2025 \nFriday 11.00am – 7.00pm \nSaturday 10.30am – 6.00pm \nSunday 10.30am – 5.00pm \nFollowing yet another successful fair in Petworth Park\, our next event there is scheduled to be held from Friday 16 to Sunday 18 May 2025 – the tenth anniversary of this popular show. \nThe famous National Trust property in the picturesque market town of Petworth has proved an ideal venue\, attracting thousands of eager visitors. In its spacious marquee\, the Petworth Park Antiques & Fine Art Fair has over 60 exhibitors\, predominantly members of The British Antique Dealers’ Association and LAPADA The Association of Art & Antiques Dealers. They offer for sale a wide range of desirable items such as fine period furniture\, clocks\, oil and watercolour paintings\, maps\, glass\, sculpture\, lighting\, vintage watches\, boxes\, silver and jewellery together with ceramics\, 20th century design objects\, drawings and prints\, textiles and carpets\, garden artefacts\, applied arts and many other decorative and unique works of art from the ancient to the contemporary. \nWe are very happy to again work with The National Trust at Petworth House as well as with the local dealer association PAADA and the Petworth Business Association\, creating yet another exciting event. The grand 17th century house boasts an internationally important art collection\, and together with its ‘Capability’ Brown landscaped country park\, it provides a magnificent backdrop for our annual fair. \nThe fair has its own free car park by the marquee – access is from the A272 Tillington Road through the gate at New Lodges. The AA signs will direct traffic to this entrance and not to the main car park on the A283\, where there is a charge of £4 for non-National Trust members. Disabled parking close to the fair entrance. The pedestrian entrance is via the Cricket Lodge gate\, also on the A272\, or via the Cowyard. \nA courtesy shuttle bus service will operate between the fair car park\, the entrance to Petworth House and the town centre\, running hourly between 11 am and 6 pm (5pm on Sunday). \nFair visitors enjoy free access to Petworth House during the three day event. National Trust members and Petworth House ticket holders may attend the antiques fair free of charge. \nLight refreshments are available in the restaurant inside the fair\, operated by The Naked Food Company. \nDogs that can be carried and guide/assistance dogs are welcome.

SUMMARY:Lunatraktors + special guest
DESCRIPTION:6 JUNE 2025 \n7.45pm – 10.30pm \nWe close out our Spring Season with a genuinely unique concert. There is literally nobody else like these guys\, and we’re so happy that we’ve finally landed them. \nLunatraktors are choreographer and percussionist Carli Jefferson\, and nonbinary vocalist and composer Clair Le Couteur. Influenced by flamenco\, post-punk\, and trip-hop\, they strip back traditional folk to rhythm and voice performed with fascinating theatricality. The pair turned heads in 2019 when their DIY debut This Is Broken Folk – recorded live in a viaduct arch by Ramsgate harbour – made it onto MOJO Magazine’s Top Ten Folk Albums. \nTheir newer work blends analogue synth\, whistles\, accordion with tuned drums\, vocal harmonies\, and a hybrid of tap dance and body percussion\, which Jefferson developed after touring with Stomp. A double act in the old-fashioned sense\, Le Couteur’s channeling voices of multiple tragi-comic characters match Jefferson’s hyper-expressive performance style.

SUMMARY:Andy Warhol: My True Story' curated by Jean Wainwright at Newlands House Gallery
DESCRIPTION:7 JUNE – 14 SEPTEMBER 2025 \nWednesday to Saturday 10.00am – 5.00pm \nSunday 11.00am – 4.00pm \n“Andy Warhol: My True Story”\, curated by Jean Wainwright at Newlands House offers a fresh perspective on Andy Warhol in an intimate presentation of drawings\, prints\, photographs\, recordings\, films\, and archival paraphernalia. \nFrom drawings such as Man with Hearts and a fictitious One Million Dollar Bill\, screenprints including Mona Lisa (Four times)\, photographs by contemporaries like Bob Adelman’s Andy Warhol Empties his Boots after being Pushed into the Pool by Edie Sedgewick\, and an intimate film of his mother\, we glimpse a very human Warhol experimenting with ideas and subject matter. Warhol was an inveterate collector and observer\, and his early drawings reveal both his fascination with the ordinary and the way he processed and communicated his subject matter in his own particular style\, developing themes which recur and evolve in his later works. \nThe exhibition intertwines artworks\, photographs\, objects and artefacts with reflective recordings of his entourage\, those closest to him\, and his family. What is revealed is an elusive and private man\, hiding behind a public party-going persona\, with his wig and dark glasses and provocative soundbites\, creator of his Factories and iconic artworks and producer of the Velvet Underground. His prescience and lasting influence are also witnessed through artworks by contemporary artists such as Gavin Turk and Rob and Nick Carter\, his “brand” exemplified through Warhol-themed objects and memorabilia. In this intimate and personal show\, we experience Warhol in different ways as each room reveals a facet of him as well as those he inspired. \nThe domestic spaces of Newlands House Gallery\, a Grade II-listed 18th Century townhouse\, seem fitting for an exhibition that offers unexpected narratives on one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. \nJean Wainwright\, an internationally recognised Warhol expert\, is a London-based art historian\, critic and curator. Her work most prominently features interviews with international artists\, photographers\, filmmakers\, and curators. As a writer and academic\, her interviews can be found in the numerous books\, catalogues\, monologues\, and peer-reviewed journals\, and she has appeared widely in the media\, including national radio and television. A Professor of Contemporary Art and Photography at the University for the Creative Arts\, Wainwright has a particular interest in authenticity in the artist interview and finding the artist’s “voice”.

SUMMARY:A Tour of Petworth House Tunnels and Ice House
DESCRIPTION:14 JUNE 2025 \n 2.30 and 3.30p.m. \nThis 45 minutes tour of the underground world of Petworth House will be led by committee Member Ian Yonge who is also a tour guide at the House. \nThe National Trust will NOT be running its own tunnel tours this year so this Society visit will be your only chance to visit in 2025. \nWe start the tour in the Summer Dairy and learn how it could kill the unwary and the role it played in Petworth Town fire fighting.  We will learn about the tunnel and underground complex at Petworth House. We will  then walk through the 1750’s servants tunnel under the courtyard and hear about how it was constructed\, its use from the 1700’s to World War 11 and its current use as a home to bats- which will all have left for their Summer holidays! On route we will diverge down a short side tunnel to the well and hear how different methods were used to bring up water over the years from a donkey to a “bug”. We will see the remnants of the 1870’s hydraulic lift.  Leaving this tunnel we will then make our way to the 1784 underground ice house\, the largest domestic icehouse in England with its three chambers capable of holding in total over 280 cubic metres of ice. We will learn about how it was built and used\, where the ice came from and how important ice was to the Victorian dinner party. We will also visit the Wood Yard (normally closed to the public) and the Cow Yard to learn about the buildings there and how essential they were to the running of the “big House”. \nNot suitable for wheel chair users. \nThere will be two tours at 2.30 and 3.30 on Saturday 14th of June with numbers limited to 12 on each tour.  As there is a limit on numbers if you would like to join please book online at  https://Petworthsociety.co.uk   or by emailing emailing Bev Sewell at  Info@Petworth Society.co.uk \nCost to members and non members £10 to defray expenses. \nEntry through Church Lodge entrance and meet in Courtyard between house and servants quarters. Say you are on tunnel tour and you will be waved through the pay barrier.
