SUMMARY:Elektra (ROH Live)
DESCRIPTION:Live from Royal Opera House\nPart of our 2019/20 Live Cinema Season\, streamed simultaneously from the ROH to our cinema screen and in full surround sound. \nStory & Background\nStrauss’s thrilling and audacious adaptation of Greek tragedy receives a new staging by the award-winning Christof Loy. This uncompromising opera\, about a daughter intent on bloody revenge and a mother driven to madness\, has provoked critics to lively debate and both shocked and excited audiences since its 1909 premiere. Antonio Pappano conducts music that combines violence with moments of exquisite tenderness in his first Strauss interpretation for The Royal Opera since 2002. The outstanding cast includes Nina Stemme (Brünnhilde in last Season’s Der Ring des Nibelungen) in the title role\, and Karita Mattila in her role debut as the haunted queen Klytämnestra.\n\nTickets £16.50 in advance (including booking fee)\nPlease arrive at least 15 mins before the performance begins.\n\nApproximate running time: 2 hours

SUMMARY:The Arts Society West Sussex - Turner vs Constable : The Great British Paint Off!
DESCRIPTION:7 APRIL 2020 \n2.00pm – 3.00pm \nThis is the story of the epic rivalry between the two giants of British art\, J.M.W. Turner and John Constable. As unlike in background and temperament as their paintings were in style\, these two creative geniuses transformed the art of landscape. This lecture/study day sets them head-to-head and examines their differences\, their similarities\, their battles and their shared triumphs. But who will ultimately be crowned star painter? As well as giving an overview of Turner and Constable\, the subject provides an enjoyable overview of the British art world during the nineteenth century. \nPresented by Nicola Moorby \n\n\n\n\n\nWebsite

SUMMARY:The Arts Society West Sussex - A Garden Like No Other: Edward James and Las Pozas
DESCRIPTION:7 JULY 2020 \n2.00pm – 3.00pm \nIn the depths of the Mexican jungle lies an enchanted valley in which strange ruins tower over waterfalls and pools. It seems like the remains of a lost civilisation\, but the arches and stairways were built only in the last century by Edward James\, a rich English eccentric and Surrealist. Ranging around the world and across the 20th century\, this colourful lecture tells the story of Edward James and Las Pozas\, introducing along the way an array of intriguing characters\, and exploring the wider theme of the modern artist-gardener. \nPresented by James Russell \nTEA AND CAKES TO FOLLOW THE TALK. \n\n\n\n\n\nWebsite

SUMMARY:Streaming: Live At Langhams
DESCRIPTION:Saturday 22nd 2020\nAugust. 7.30pm – 9pm.\nDonations to Trees For The Downs – a South Downs National Park project.\n\nMore about the artists:\n\nSerious Child is indie folk singer/songwriter Alan Young\, who lives in the oak woods of West Sussex.\n\nFollowing years living in cities around the world\, Alan returned to his roots to record “Time In The Trees”\, a set of reflections on the modern world from within the forest\, released earlier this year. In concert\, he is joined by folk singer Carla March to provide a feast of harmony and lyrical observation.\n\n“A jamboree of versatility and melody” – Folk Radio UK\, Featured Album Of The Month\n“Brimming with vigour and style” ⭑⭑⭑⭑ – RnR\n“The year’s first home grown album of depth\, vision and commitment” ⭑⭑⭑⭑⭑ – Spiral Earth\n\nTobiah sings straight from the heart’ Gaby Roslin BBC London\n\nSinger songwriter Tobiah is known for her poignant lyrics\, for touching hearts with life-affirming stories of love and endurance\, and for a voice described by the BBC’s Justine Greene as ‘silky\, velvety\, ethereal and heavenly.’\n\nBorn in Manchester\, Tobiah started writing songs in earnest in her late 20s\, after being given her first guitar at the age of 14. “My songs are very visual\, about experiences in my life or a story that has caught my imagination. Lyrics are important – I could never write a song that didn’t move me.“ Her latest album Are We Angels has been described as “thoughtful\, elegant and disarmingly moving” by Fatea and “the discovery of the year” by Tony Birch at Folking.com.\n\nMolly is a young singer/songwriter and emerging talent from Ifold in West Sussex who has been making waves with her beautiful debut single “It’s Not Fair” released earlier this year. She brings a fresh and modern take to pop music with her ukulele and stunning voice. When we asked her to perform\, Molly pointed out that this fitted perfectly with her upbringing\, saying: “we kind of love trees in this family\, “my Dad’s a carpenter\, brother’s a tree surgeon and Mum’s an artist”.

In the excitement Antony bit Picasso\, and Picasso bit him right back\, but it did not spoil the friendship and during the many visits he made to Picasso’s homes in France Antony felt very much at home. He loved the menagerie of pets – the live ones and those Picasso made as sculptures that seemed alive. Antony’s parents were Roland Penrose\, the curator and biographer of Picasso\, and Lee Miller\, the photographer. Picasso painted her portrait six times and she photographed him more than 1\,000 times and her images illustrate Antony’s entertaining and amusing account of life around Picasso. This lecture also covers the process of writing and the design of the book which has been very favourably reviewed and is a best seller. \nPresented by Antony Penrose \n \n\n\n\n\n\nWebsite

SUMMARY:Ron Arad 69 at Newlands Gallery
DESCRIPTION:NOW – 7 MARCH 2021\nA survey of significant works by the pioneering artist\, architect and industrial designer. Curated by the gallery’s Artistic Director\, Simon de Pury\, this is the gallery’s debut exhibition devoted to design. \n‘RON ARAD 69’ features early works from the 1980s and 1990s alongside pieces from the past two decades\, including unseen releases for 2020\, presented against the historic backdrop of the gallery’s Georgian townhouse setting. Timed with the artist’s 69th birthday this year\, the exhibition features approximately 50 studio pieces\, many of which have been exhibited around the world\, including at the Centre Pompidou\, Paris; The Museum of Modern Art (MoMa)\, New York; the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A)\, London; and the Royal Academy of Arts\, London alongside works that have never been showed publicly before. \nRon Arad is one of the all-time greats in the world of design and architecture\, similar to the way Helmut Newton – the subject of our previous exhibition at Newlands House – was in photography. I greatly look forward to seeing the contrast between the 18th century architecture of the gallery and the resolutely 21st century feel of Arad’s dazzling and bold works – \nSimon de Pury\, Artistic Director\, Newlands House.\n\nProminent works within the exhibition include Now What\, 2020\, which makes its first public appearance following a virtual launch earlier this year. Otherwise known as the ‘Brexit chair’\, Now What commemorates the day the UK left the EU\, with every single newspaper published on 31st January 2020 printed across the chair’s surface. Recognisable pieces from the 2000s\, such as Gomli\, 2008 (red gelcoat)\, Gomli\, 2009 (polished stainless steel)\, are exhibited outdoors\, in the grounds of Newlands House while the galleries 12 rooms will exhibit iconic works in stainless steel and polished aluminium from throughout his career.   Works from Ron Arad’s collaboration with Murano glass masters Venini\, several presented here for the first time\, are also on show at the gallery. \nA survey of significant works by the pioneering artist\, architect and industrial designer. SUMMARY:The Arts Society West Sussex - MAD MEN AND ARTISTS
DESCRIPTION:6 OCTOBER 2020 \n2.00pm – 3.00pm \nFine art has provided advertisers and their agencies with a great deal of material to use in their creative campaigns. Tony describes some of the processes by which these advertisements have been created and why the works of Leonardo da Vinci\, Raphael and Michelangelo have been a particularly rich source. From the Renaissance through to the present day fine art continues to provide opportunities to enhance Brand imagery with admiration\, humour\, satire and irony. In an entertaining and informative lecture Tony uses a wide range of visuals and video to show examples of the original works\, the creative process and the (not always entirely successful) advertisements that are the end result. \nPresented by Tony Rawlins \n \n\n\n\n\n\nWebsite

SUMMARY:The Arts Society West Sussex - DAMIEN HIRST AND CONTEMPORARY ART
DESCRIPTION:3 NOVEMBER 2020 \n2.00pm – 3.00pm \nAGM (MEMBERS ONLY) AT 1:30PM \nDamien Hirst is the most famous British artist since Henry Moore. Not even Francis Bacon had such a huge international presence. And yet in his home country he is often seen as a practical joker\, pulling the wool over the eyes of the public\, and not making proper art at all. This lecture aims to dispel this and show that he is a deeply serious artist making work that is significant and influential. \nPresented by David Worthington \n \n\n\n\n\n\nWebsite

SUMMARY:The Arts Society West Sussex - PICTURING THE NATIVITY
DESCRIPTION:1 DECEMBER 2020 \n2.00pm – 3.00pm \nThe description of the Nativity in S. Luke is brief mentioning only the Holy family. But this did not prevent artists including a full supporting cast and incidental props to embellish both the mystical and maternal aspects\, thereby capturing the imagination and empathy of the believer. So by the 15th century\, the story had been expanded to include animals\, shepherds\, midwives\, even contemporary portraits. The lecture will explore this by looking at Italian and Flemish paintings on the subject and the writings which supplied the stories. The result is touching\, amusing\, at times bordering on the blasphemous\, but never dull. \nMINCE PIES AND MULLED WINE FOLLOWING THE TALK \nPresented by Shirley Smith \n \n\n\n\n\n\nWebsite
