We are looking for help and contacts to improve the facilities at our Scout HQ and will be focussing on improving outside areas and repainting the inside of the hall.\nWe would love to see as many of our Scouting family at the HQ as possible. Do you have a couple of hours to spare to come along with your Scout and lend a hand to help with DIY or painting? This is another great opportunity to build on the volunteering ‘give it a go’ spirit that is such a key part of Scouting.\nThe Big Help Out is a nationwide campaign that got a lot of coverage last year and is set to be even bigger this year. DESCRIPTION:12 JUNE 2024 \n7.30pm – 10.30pm \nThe Currys have been staking their claim within the indie music scene since 2013\, when vocalist/guitarist Tommy Curry quit his teaching job and moved to Charlottesville\, Virginia\, to join the harmony-based folk-rock outfit newly formed by brother Jimmy Curry (vocals\, guitar) and cousin Galen Curry (vocals\, bass). The band have since written and released three full-length albums: their studio debut Follow (2014)\, called “eye-opening\, but warmly familiar” by Earmilk\, and whose title track is “one of the most beautiful pieces of music I’ve ever heard” (Todd Moe of NCPR); sophomore effort West of Here (2016)\, with its “tight-as-a-rubber-band” harmonies and “infectious” songwriting (PopMatters); and the expansive\, self-produced This Side of the Glass (2019). \nDuring the pandemic\, The Currys took the opportunity to explore different avenues of creativity. In 2020 the trio launched a podcast\, This Side of the Mic\, to showcase songs and share some laughs and insights. The band leveraged their down-time into writing and demoing dozens of new tracks\, polishing their production chops and collaborating with fellow creators to expand their sound. The singles they released through 2021\, such as pop/R&B track “Man On the Side” and Graceland-inspired “Last Night\,” pushed the boundaries of their previous catalog. \nIn March of 2023 the three Currys were joined by Sebastian Green (drums)\, Sam Whedon (guitar)\, and Alex Rees (keys) to begin production on their fourth studio album. Keepers\, released in October 2023\, represents another step in the band’s evolution\, pairing the lush\, three-part harmony that marks any Currys project with a more guitar-driven\, indie pop aesthetic. The album pays homage to the band’s influences\, with tracks evoking Sgt. Pepper’s\, Jason Isbell\, even dreamy pop-punk. Keepers is an honest next step for a group with an appetite for exploration and a long road ahead.

SUMMARY:Leonora Carrington: Rebel Visionary at Newlands House Gallery
DESCRIPTION:12 JULY 26 OCTOBER 2024 \nWednesday to Saturday 10am – 5pm \nSunday 11am – 4pm \n\n\n\nIn May 2024 Leonora Carrington became the most successful female artist in UK history\, in terms of sales: her painting Les Distractions de Dagobert (1945) was sold at Sotheby’s in New York for USD$28.5 million. \nHer legacy is now on a new footing.  Last year\, the Wall Street Journal predicted she would be the next Frida Kahlo.  Like Kahlo\, Carrington’s life was as surreal as her paintings; like Kahlo\, she drew heavily on her own extraordinary experiences in her work.\nFor many years\, this eventful life story – especially her love affair with Max Ernst\, and her spell in a Spanish asylum\, which fascinated others in her Surrealist circles – have been central to discussions of her work.  But Carrington was no muse.  As she said: “I didn’t have time to be anyone’s muse… I was too busy rebelling against my family and learning to be an artist.” \n\n\n\nLeonora Carrington: Rebel Visionary (12 July – 26 October) will re-examine her work in the light of her posthumous success.  An artist who broke boundaries and created imaginative new worlds. Carrington was – like all the greats – a creator in many different directions.  As her long-time friend and patron Edward James said:  “She…never relinquished her love of experimentation; the results being that she [was] able to diversity and explore a hundred or more techniques for the expression of her creative powers.” \nThis summer\, Newlands House Gallery in Petworth\, Sussex brings together a wide range of Carrington’s work\, to show the span of her output across a wide range of media. Loans will include a wall of masks; a series of masks made for a theatrical production of The Tempest in the 1950s; original lithographs; tapestries; sketches; sculptures; jewellery – and of course paintings.  Together they will show the full range of Carrington’s prolific and original output\, across a career that spanned eight decades. \nAs the feminist art collective The Guerrilla Girls wryly commented\, being a woman artist comes with certain advantages: these include being able to work without the pressures of success\, and discovering your career picks up in your eighties. \nToday\, more than a decade after her death in May 2011\, Carrington’s time has come.  Newlands House Gallery will focus on the breadth\, the variety and the extraordinary imagination of work across her eight-decade career.   \n– Joanna Moorhead\, Exhibition Curator
