SUMMARY:Martin Turner (ex Wishbone Ash): Petworth
DESCRIPTION:17 SEPTEMBER 2022 \n7.30pm – 10.30pm \nMartin Turner and his band return to the concert stages in 2022 to perform two vintage Wishbone Ash album in their entirety – 1972’s Argus (celebrating the album’s 50th anniversary) and 1973’s Wishbone Four. \nWishbone Ash was formed by West Country musicians Martin Turner and Steve Upton\, who arrived in London in 1969 to embark on their musical journey. Intent on creating a musical sound that was rich in texture and melody\, Martin Turner envisaged the band’s innovative harmony-guitar hallmark and guitarists Ted Turner and Andy Powell were recruited via a now legendary Melody Maker advert. The partnership of the original line-up of Wishbone Ash forged a unique musical identity that would produce some of rock music’s best loved works and influencing numerous successful bands\, resulting in millions of album sales and concert attendances. Wishbone Ash would become one of the most enduring British rock acts – its name synonymous with high quality guitar-driven melodic rock music. \nFive decades later\, the music of the classic line-ups of Wishbone Ash continues to delight audiences worldwide through both live performances and a rich legacy of recorded work that continues to be enjoyed by fans old and new. Classic album releases such as Wishbone Ash\, Argus\, Pilgrimage\, Wishbone Four\, There’s the Rub\, New England and Live Dates defined the Wishbone Ash sound and have touched the hearts of several generations of music fans. As lead vocalist\, bassist and key creative force\, founding original member Martin Turner was central to the critical and commercial success of Wishbone Ash’s most revered albums\, with his passionate vocal delivery\, songwriting ability\, keen melodic sense and production values being major ingredients in the definitive Wishbone Ash sound. Martin Turner continues to delight audiences with performances of the band’s best loved works with his current line-up\, which features guitarists Danny Willson and Misha Nikolic\, and drummer Tim Brown. \nThe 2022 tour will see Martin and his band performing two vintage albums back to back in addition to other Wishbone Ash classics. \nFeaturing epic tracks such as “The King Will Come”\, “Warrior” and “Throw Down the Sword”\, Wishbone Ash’s seminal 1972 Argus album achieved a #2 UK album chart position and won UK music press “Album of The Year” awards. On its 50th anniversary\, Argus remains one of the most enduring works of the classic rock era. \n1973’s Wishbone Four album explored fresh territory and contained shorter songs\, a strong folk influence on several tracks\, a harder rock sound on others and included stage favourites “Doctor”\, “Rock n Roll Widow” and “No Easy Road” alongside deep cuts such as “Everybody Needs a Friend” and “Sorrel”. Wishbone Four reached #12 in the UK. The 2022 tour marks the first time the album has been played live in its entirety. \nThis double bill of vintage Wishbone Ash albums is an event that no Wishbone Ash aficionado will want to miss.

SUMMARY:Gordon Rushmer\, A road well-travelled’ at Rountree Tryon Gallery
DESCRIPTION:20 SEPTEMBER – 8 OCTOBER 2022 \n10.00am – 6.00pm \nWe welcome Gordon Rushmer back for his fifth solo exhibition\, A road well-travelled. \nOver the last few years\, with restrictions to travel\, we all came to appreciate our own homes and the landscapes around us. As the UK opened up\, more and more people travelled around Britain rekindling their love of this sceptred isle. Gordon amongst them travelled the length and breadth of Britain soaking up the stunning scenery and daily life and transferring his passions to paper through his skilled use of watercolour and oil. His collection of paintings encapsulates this revival of our love affair with the British landscape and reflects Gordon’s own increasing obsession with early-20th century British watercolour. \nGordon is one of the few contemporary British watercolourists to have been included in Tate Britain’s much-vaunted exhibition ‘Watercolour’ in 2011. Earlier this year\, we launched Gordon’s new book ‘Pinching myself: an Artist at War’ which tells the fascinating story of Gordon’s time as a war artist based in Bosnia\, Kosovo\, Afghanistan\, Iraq and Eritrea from 1997 to 2007. The original artworks\, which depicted the harrowing scenes of war that he experienced as an official war artist\, have this year been taken into the collection of the Imperial War Museum. \nGordon will be in the gallery for the preview on Friday 23rd September from 5-7pm and again on Saturday 24th to talk us through his travels and inspirations. We look forward to welcoming you to view A road well-travelled.

SUMMARY:The Indestructible Lee Miller" with Antony Penrose
DESCRIPTION:30 SEPTEMBER 2022 \n6.30pm – 9.00pm \n\n\nAbout Antony Penrose:\n\nHe grew up in Farleys Farm House\, the old Sussex farmhouse his parents used to occupy in the village of Chiddingly. Life was a perpetual arts congress where British artists like Henry Moore\, Eileen Agar\, Richard Hamilton\, John Craxton\, and Kenneth Armitage mixed with leading figures from Europe such as Max Ernst\, Joan Miró\, Jean Dubuffet and where Pablo Picasso visited in 1950.\n \nUnder the surface of what seemed one long hedonistic gathering\, there was a hive of activity and some of the great achievements in modern art of the last century had Farleys Farm House as their start point.\n \nAntony Penrose has written numerous books\, articles and two plays on the subject of his parents and their associates. Broadcasting includes BBC Radio 4 Women’s Hour\, Today and Front Row\, and on television he has appeared on BBC’s The One Show\, Flog It\, The Culture Show and on CNN. He is an accredited lecturer for The Arts Society\, lecturing widely in UK and overseas. He is known as a curator of photography\, and is an artist and film maker in his own right.\n\nFor more information visit: https://newlandshouse.gallery/events

SUMMARY:Aida (The Royal Opera) ROH Live
DESCRIPTION:12 OCTOBER 2022 \n6.45pm – 10.00pm \n\nLive Broadcast: Part of our 2022/23 Live Arts Series\, streamed simultaneously from the Royal Opera House to our cinema screen and in full surround sound.\nLove and duty collide and nations clash in Verdi’s political drama\, starring Elena Stikhina and conducted by Antonio Pappano.\nPrincess Aida has been kidnapped: a valuable prize in a war between Egypt and Ethiopia. Meanwhile\, the ambitious soldier Radames wrestles with his feelings for her. As they draw closer together\, each must make an agonizing choice between their loyalty to home\, and their love for each other. In this new production\, director Robert Carsen situates Verdi’s large-scale political drama within a contemporary world\, framing its power struggles and toxic jealousies in the apparatus of a modern\, totalitarian state.
