SUMMARY:Ron Arad 69 at Newlands Gallery
DESCRIPTION:NOW – 7 MARCH 2021\nA survey of significant works by the pioneering artist\, architect and industrial designer. Curated by the gallery’s Artistic Director\, Simon de Pury\, this is the gallery’s debut exhibition devoted to design. \n‘RON ARAD 69’ features early works from the 1980s and 1990s alongside pieces from the past two decades\, including unseen releases for 2020\, presented against the historic backdrop of the gallery’s Georgian townhouse setting. Timed with the artist’s 69th birthday this year\, the exhibition features approximately 50 studio pieces\, many of which have been exhibited around the world\, including at the Centre Pompidou\, Paris; The Museum of Modern Art (MoMa)\, New York; the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A)\, London; and the Royal Academy of Arts\, London alongside works that have never been showed publicly before. \nRon Arad is one of the all-time greats in the world of design and architecture\, similar to the way Helmut Newton – the subject of our previous exhibition at Newlands House – was in photography. I greatly look forward to seeing the contrast between the 18th century architecture of the gallery and the resolutely 21st century feel of Arad’s dazzling and bold works – \nSimon de Pury\, Artistic Director\, Newlands House.\n\nProminent works within the exhibition include Now What\, 2020\, which makes its first public appearance following a virtual launch earlier this year. Otherwise known as the ‘Brexit chair’\, Now What commemorates the day the UK left the EU\, with every single newspaper published on 31st January 2020 printed across the chair’s surface. Recognisable pieces from the 2000s\, such as Gomli\, 2008 (red gelcoat)\, Gomli\, 2009 (polished stainless steel)\, are exhibited outdoors\, in the grounds of Newlands House while the galleries 12 rooms will exhibit iconic works in stainless steel and polished aluminium from throughout his career.   Works from Ron Arad’s collaboration with Murano glass masters Venini\, several presented here for the first time\, are also on show at the gallery. \nA survey of significant works by the pioneering artist\, architect and industrial designer. SUMMARY:The Arts Society West Sussex - Oscar Wilde: Up Close
DESCRIPTION:2 March 2021\n\n2.00pm – 3.00pm\n\n \nPRESENTED BY GILES RAMSAY\n“I put all my genius into my life; I put only my talent into my works.” \nI examine the public and private life of one of the world’s most original and controversial artists. Born into a moderately respectable Dublin family Oscar Wilde recreated himself as an international celebrity and wrote a series of short stories and plays that charmed the world. In 1890 he also published the last of the great myths – The Picture of Dorian Gray. Ten years later Wilde\, devoured by his fame\, his demons and his decadence\, would be dead. \nGiles Ramsay is an independent theatre director and producer who specialises in creating new work with artists in developing countries. He is the Founding Director of the charity Developing Artists (www.developingartists.org)\, a Fellow of St. Chad’s College\, Durham University and Course Leader in Theatre at The Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Giles has run theatre projects in Botswana\, Cape Verde\, Equatorial Guinea\, Kenya\, Kosovo\, Palestine\, Mexico\, Thailand and Zimbabwe and given numerous talks for institutions ranging from The Foundation for Mexican Literature in Mexico City to The Royal College of Physicians in London. He regularly lectures on the history and practice of theatre on the Queen Mary 2 as it sails from New York to the UK. Giles combines academic analysis with hands on experience to bring a unique insight to the world of the theatre. \nPLEASE NOTE!\nWhilst Covid-19 restrictions are in force our Talks will be delivered via Zoom at our usual meeting time\, that is to say\, at 2:00pm on the 1st Tuesday of the Month. We will email all members with the link to join these Talks in the week before they are due to take place.
