SUMMARY:Julian Opie: Collected Works/Works Collected at Newlands House Gallery
DESCRIPTION:6 NOVEMBER 2021 –  6 MARCH 2022 \n \nWednesday – Saturday 10am-5pm \nSunday 11am-4pm \n\n\n\n\nOpening 6 November\, Newlands House Gallery presents Julian Opie: Collected Works/Works Collected\, showcasing over 100 objects from the contemporary British artist’s personal collection\, ranging from the ancient world to the present day\, alongside a selection of his own sculptures\, paintings and films. Presented in the historic market town of Petworth in Newlands House Gallery’s Georgian building\, the exhibition offers a unique opportunity for visitors to see how Opie’s interests and journey as a collector\, inform the art he makes himself. \nJulian Opie is internationally recognised for his distinctive and refined drawing style\, distilling the visual information of our everyday reality to a universal language of symbols and signs\, reflecting his preoccupation with the idea of representation\, and the means by which images are perceived and understood. A wide range of techniques are visible throughout Opie’s work – from cutting-edge LCD technology to mosaic\, beadwork and engraved stone – and are presented here in dialogue with the artworks that have inspired them. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOpie writes: “Spookily often\, when I am stuck for decisions\, I get up and look at some other art and find a solution right there. The work of others pushes me beyond what I know and assume\, it suggests new logics and approaches and makes me feel not so alone in this strange endeavour.” \nIn a multifarious and dynamic display\, the exhibition includes Ancient Greek and Roman statuary\, Egyptian sarcophagi\, Japanese Ukiyo-e woodblocks\, beaded sun hats\, armour and Indonesian ancestral figures\, alongside original manga sketches from Studio Ghibli and contemporary works by\, amongst others\, Kara Walker\, Chuck Close\, Roy Lichtenstein and Sol LeWitt. \nCarefully curated within the architecture and domestic space of Newlands House Gallery\, the exhibition also provides an intimate visual map of Opie’s interior world. The works are not organised chronologically\, instead they are curated to reflect the inquisitive mind of the artist; everyday scenes of Japanese women by Kitagawa Utamaro are positioned alongside Opie’s animated LCD portrait Ruth smoking 2 (2006); Augustin Edouart’s silhouette portraits of Victorian families are presented together with Opie’s own silhouettes from 2010\, depicting both his own family and friends and The Gallery Staff; in the garden\, recent metal sculptures Deer 2 and Dog 4 (2020) are installed alongside Yoko XIX (2006) by Don Brown. Opie’s portrait paintings and 3D sculpture are shown together with old Master paintings by Joshua Reynolds and a variety of helmets meant both for recreation and battle. These unconventional combinations offer in insight into his ongoing artistic endeavour\, steeped in the visual and material languages of the past; a conversation spanning hundreds and thousands of years and continuing on into the future. \nNewlands House is a new gallery inspired by the historic associations of Petworth and Sussex with great artists\, writers and designers from times past. It seeks to reinvigorate this legacy with the vitality of modern and contemporary art and design shaping contemporary culture. In the intimacy of a converted home\, Newlands House sits at the centre of Sussex’s burgeoning cultural scene\, spanning museums\, art centres\, festivals\, vineyards\, nature trails and stately homes. In 2020\, the gallery opened to great acclaim with two inaugural exhibitions\, a tribute to Helmut Newton and a survey of top works by designer\, architect and artist Ron Arad. Set in the heart of the South Downs\, Newlands House invites visitors to engage with the work of the greatest artists in an unexpected\, Georgian setting\, contrasting to white cube environments the art historical canon is predominantly presented in.

SUMMARY:The Magic of Patterns - Arts Society Talk
DESCRIPTION:1 MARCH 2022 \n2.00pm – 3.30pm \nFrom the Alhambra to William Morris\, patterns can be gorgeous\, yet pattern has often been dismissed as “mere ornament” in comparison with painting. We will discover what a mistaken view that is as we look at the ideas that inspired some of the great pattern inventors and traditions from around the world. We’ll see that whilst some glorious effects depend on very simple patterning procedures\, others can be wonderfully clever\, as we watch patterns evolving across the screen in beautiful animations. \nDavid studied History at Oxford\, and from 1968-82 worked for Nottingham Castle Museum. From 1982-98\, he lectured in Museum Studies and Art History at University of Manchester and has published a book about museum practice with Manchester University Press\, Exhibiting Authenticity (1997). \nPRESENTED BY DAVID PHILLIPS\nTalks in the Fittleworth Village Hall at 2:00pm on the 1st Tuesday of each month. Visitors are welcome to join our Talks at a price of £5 each visit.

SUMMARY:Chris Orr RA & Caron Penney at Kevis House Gallery
DESCRIPTION:3 MARCH – 9 APRIL 2022 \nTuesday – Saturday: 10am – 5pm \nA series of eight Satires for our time.\, being shown together for the first time \n\nCHRIS ORR\nBorn in London in 1943\, Chris Orr studied at the Royal College of Art 1964-1967. He was elected a Royal Academician in 1995\, and was Professor of Printmaking at the Royal College of Art 1998-2008. He was awarded an MBE and made Professor Emeritus in 2008. Elected as Treasurer of the Royal Academy and served from 2014 to 2018 \nChris Orr has had numerous exhibitions throughout the world which include: ‘The Complete Chris Orr’ (touring show)\, 1976; ‘Many Mansions’ (touring show)\, 1990; Six Royal Academicians in China’\, shown in Beijing\, Shanghai\, and London\,  2005; LithORR graphy’\, Royal Academy\, Fine Rooms 2012. ‘The Miserable Lives of Fabulous Artists’ Royal Academy 2018. \nHis work is in public collections including The Arts Council of England\, The British Council\, The British Museum\, The Government Art Collection\, The Palace of Westminster Collection\, The Ruskin Library at Lancaster University\, The Queens Collection\, National Portrait Gallery\, Royal Academy of Arts\, Science Museum\, Tate Britain\, and Victorian and Albert Museum. \n”Prints come quite naturally in series. The artist can develop a theme\, construct a multi level narrative and explore many aspects of ideas and techniques. A turning point in my career came through making 10 etchings about the life of John Ruskin back in the 1970s. I went on to make many prints and paintings that have serial themes and work in groups. \nIn 2021\, with endless fanfares and raspberries\, we were on the cusp of coming out of the state of paralysis to a fragile new\, and not so new normal. For myself and everybody else the ground has shifted. My new collection of satirical prints are for our time.” \nChris Orr 2022 \n\nCARON PENNEY\nPenney studied Constructed Textiles at Middlesex University\, graduating with a BA (Hons) degree. After working as a professional weaver\, Director and Consultant for twenty-two years\, in 2013 she opened her own studio. In 2021 Penney moved to the Barlavington Estate near Petworth. She has been featured in House & Garden magazine in November 2017 and Crafts Magazine in July/Aug 2018. Penney was a selected artist for the Royal Academy of Arts\, Summer Exhibition in 2014 and 2020 and has exhibited widely. Penney was a selected maker for Collect Open\, curated by the Crafts Council for the Collect Art Fair 2022. \nPenney uses the same limited range of materials traditionally used to make handwoven tapestry\, worsted wool and gilt gold threads\, with the addition of dyed cotton warp which edge the finely woven pieces. She has a deep understanding of hand woven tapestry techniques and her resulting tapestries continue to be embraced by the training she acquired as a professional weaver. She uses this knowledge to teach tapestry at numerous locations\, from Central Saint Martin‘s to Morley College. As a professional weaver she currently helps the artist and musician Martin Creed to realise his tapestry artwork.

SUMMARY:Petworth Fringe Music Night - Hattie Briggs + Sarah Dearlove
DESCRIPTION:3 MARCH 2022 \n8.00pm – 10.30pm \nHalf Me\, Half You” album launch \nHattie has played more sellout shows at the Petworth Fringe than any other artist\, and we are delighted to have her back to launch her new album\, Half Me Half You. If you’ve seen her on her other visits\, you’ll know what to expect – beautiful\, heart-rending songs\, and an intimate style of performing like being in Hattie’s living room. \nOriginally from Chichester\, Hattie Briggs was fortunate enough to be discovered by platinum-selling singer\, Alfie Boe\, who was stopped in his tracks by her pure vocal while she was busking at Paddington Station. She was personally invited by him to open all 21 shows on his recent UK tour\, the finale of which was at the Royal Albert Hall\, after which she and her band received a standing ovation. “I can honestly say it was the first time I had seen an audience stand and applaud a support act.” . To top things off\, Alfie welcomed Hattie back onto the stage each night during his set to perform a duet\, which went down a storm with audiences.

SUMMARY:Petworth Fringe Music Night - David Ford + Annie Dressner
DESCRIPTION:17 MARCH 2022\n\n8.00pm – 10.30pm\nFor the first time in twenty years\, there is nobody trying to make David Ford famous. \nAfter a succession of record labels have marketed him as a pop star\, a protest singer\, an indie hipster\, a balladeer and a bluesman\, he feels much more at home operating on the fringes of the music business\, not trying to be famous\, not trying to get rich. It might be an unconventional way to conduct a musical career\, but David’s not a conventional guy. \n“Unmissable” – ★★★★★ The Guardian
