SUMMARY:Chris Orr RA & Caron Penney at Kevis House Gallery
DESCRIPTION:3 MARCH – 9 APRIL 2022 \nTuesday – Saturday: 10am – 5pm \nA series of eight Satires for our time.\, being shown together for the first time \n\nCHRIS ORR\nBorn in London in 1943\, Chris Orr studied at the Royal College of Art 1964-1967. He was elected a Royal Academician in 1995\, and was Professor of Printmaking at the Royal College of Art 1998-2008. He was awarded an MBE and made Professor Emeritus in 2008. Elected as Treasurer of the Royal Academy and served from 2014 to 2018 \nChris Orr has had numerous exhibitions throughout the world which include: ‘The Complete Chris Orr’ (touring show)\, 1976; ‘Many Mansions’ (touring show)\, 1990; Six Royal Academicians in China’\, shown in Beijing\, Shanghai\, and London\,  2005; LithORR graphy’\, Royal Academy\, Fine Rooms 2012. ‘The Miserable Lives of Fabulous Artists’ Royal Academy 2018. \nHis work is in public collections including The Arts Council of England\, The British Council\, The British Museum\, The Government Art Collection\, The Palace of Westminster Collection\, The Ruskin Library at Lancaster University\, The Queens Collection\, National Portrait Gallery\, Royal Academy of Arts\, Science Museum\, Tate Britain\, and Victorian and Albert Museum. \n”Prints come quite naturally in series. The artist can develop a theme\, construct a multi level narrative and explore many aspects of ideas and techniques. A turning point in my career came through making 10 etchings about the life of John Ruskin back in the 1970s. I went on to make many prints and paintings that have serial themes and work in groups. \nIn 2021\, with endless fanfares and raspberries\, we were on the cusp of coming out of the state of paralysis to a fragile new\, and not so new normal. For myself and everybody else the ground has shifted. My new collection of satirical prints are for our time.” \nChris Orr 2022 \n\nCARON PENNEY\nPenney studied Constructed Textiles at Middlesex University\, graduating with a BA (Hons) degree. After working as a professional weaver\, Director and Consultant for twenty-two years\, in 2013 she opened her own studio. In 2021 Penney moved to the Barlavington Estate near Petworth. She has been featured in House & Garden magazine in November 2017 and Crafts Magazine in July/Aug 2018. Penney was a selected artist for the Royal Academy of Arts\, Summer Exhibition in 2014 and 2020 and has exhibited widely. Penney was a selected maker for Collect Open\, curated by the Crafts Council for the Collect Art Fair 2022. \nPenney uses the same limited range of materials traditionally used to make handwoven tapestry\, worsted wool and gilt gold threads\, with the addition of dyed cotton warp which edge the finely woven pieces. She has a deep understanding of hand woven tapestry techniques and her resulting tapestries continue to be embraced by the training she acquired as a professional weaver. She uses this knowledge to teach tapestry at numerous locations\, from Central Saint Martin‘s to Morley College. As a professional weaver she currently helps the artist and musician Martin Creed to realise his tapestry artwork.

SUMMARY:Jill Bray: Earth Lines. A Retrospective
DESCRIPTION:15 -31 JULY 2021 \n10.00am – 5.00pm \nPrintmaker and painter Jill Bray (b. 1936) has over the past four decades created an extensive and unique body of work inspired by her abiding interest in the landscape. Bray studied art first at Bishop Otter College\, Chichester and then at Southampton College of Art where she was influenced by the work of Peter Lanyon\, Graham Sutherland\, and Ivon Hitchens. \n\n\n\n\nBray exhibited in numerous shows in the UK and overseas\, was a member of Printmaker’s Council\, and has work is in several public collections. Yet she has remained overlooked compared to some of her contemporaries working in a similar vein. This retrospective exhibition attempts to redress that situation. 50 paintings\, prints and collages from 1979 to 2019 will be on display and for sale.\nThis exhibition is part of the Petworth Festival programme\, and is accompanied by a talk on 15 July by Dr. Gill Clarke about the remarkable collection of Modern British art held by Chichester University: “The Bishop Otter Art Collection: The Vision Of Two Remarkable Women”.

SUMMARY:Simon Hitchen - Trace at Kevis House Gallery
DESCRIPTION:19 MAY – 30 JUNE \n10.00am  – 5.00pm \nTrace: The track left by a moving pen following a line back to its origin – a minimal mark of something having existed. \nChance and rhythm. Order and chaos \n \nSIMON HITCHENS \nTrace – artist statement \nAs a sculptor\, my practice is multi-disciplinary: working through a variety of mediums as well as drawing\, painting and film in order to explore and execute my ideas. I work on large-scale public sculpture commissions where the work is concerned with specifics of place whilst retaining the integrity of my own sculptural voice. At the same time\, I push ideas within my studio practice through research and investigation where I experiment with materials and concepts: this is the core of my practice\, part of which has led to this particular body of drawings – Deconstructing Wholeness. \nDrawing often enables me to clarify my concepts before I commit to exploring them further\, or sometimes acts as a deciphering tool after I have finished a sculpture. Drawing can also act as a touchstone to the more instinctive side of my practice. It acts as a bridge between my conscious thoughts and my subconscious. I often work in series\, searching out abstract feelings akin to navigating through a foggy landscape. \nThe starting point for the drawings in this exhibition\, are the shadows cast from stones local to my studio environment. In these drawings I have set up a system of prescribed rules where my hand becomes an objective tool to create the drawing and I let the system run until it is complete. I am not focused on an end result before I start\, instead I relax into the meditative actions needed for the completion of the task. The titles Deconstructing \nWholeness are descriptive of my actions and perceptions of humble stones which most individuals would overlook. My aim is to discover different ways to perceive rock\, this most ubiquitous of Earth’s materials. \nThe natural world is an endless source of inspiration to me\, and a direct tool I use to create my work. Rock is the material focus and conceptual back bone to my creative practice. By drawing it\, I attempt to deepen my understanding of the interconnectedness between the human and the non-human\, as a means of understanding our relationship with impermanence.
