SUMMARY:JOHN HITCHENS; PATTERNS OF SEEING - Paintings Past and Present at Moncrieff Bray Gallery
DESCRIPTION:28 MARCH – 18 APRIL 2026 \nSaturday 28 March and Sunday 29 March open 10am – 6pm \nThereafter Tuesday to Saturday\, 10am – 4pm \nEXHIBITION OPENING PARTY SAT 28 March 4pm – 6pm \nThe early paintings in the exhibition\, such as Selsey Marshland demonstrate John Hitchens’s remarkable talent as a young artist. They highlight his ability to organise complex compositions and to depict light and shade through broad\, expressive tones. \nFrom 1968\, Hitchens focused on the expansive views from the edge of Duncton Hill\, overlooking the Sussex Weald. He established an open-air studio at this location and returned repeatedly over the next nine years to capture the changing landscape. The exhibition features ten significant paintings from this period\, showcasing his evolving approach to landscape from Lowland Panorama March to more abstract works like Distant Orchard and Fields II. \nDuring the 1980s\, Hitchens’s attention turned to the Far Wood at Greenleaves in Graffham. Again\, he set up an outdoor studio and revisited the same site\, painting in series. The exhibition includes 15 paintings from this exceptional period when he produced highly personal and powerful paintings. \nThese works are the product of deep visual thinking and analysis as Hitchens concentrates on striking the exact balance of colour\, form and space. In a single work\, like Far Wood Looking North\, one moves fluidly from one perspective to another while playing with spatial relationships\, rhythm\, and harmony. \nAlways seeking new modes of expression\, Hitchens’s work in the early 1990s took a new abstract direction\, focusing on man’s interaction with the landscape. This was partly inspired by flights  in a Cessna in 1990\, from Goodwood airport over the Downs. From the air\, he observed not only natural landforms\, such as contours\, riverbeds\, and ancient woodland\, but also the traces of centuries of human influence—field boundaries\, plough lines\, fence posts\, ancient footpaths\, and stubble burning. He moved away from a naturalistic palette\, concentrating instead on the formal qualities of a limited range of colours. The final section of the exhibition is dedicated to Hitchens’s later landscapes\, which reveal his growing interest in abstraction and the material qualities of the land itself. \nThree-dimensional works are also prominently featured. These pieces demonstrate his direct engagement with the physical elements of his surroundings. Among them are paintings created on timber recovered from the devastation of the Great Storm of 1987\, as well as sand paintings constructed from layered strata of different coloured sands. \nHitchens was the subject of a major exhibition at Southampton City Art Gallery in 2020\, which surveyed his entire body of work from the 1960s to the present day. More recently\, his work has been thoroughly documented in two extensively illustrated monographs published by Samson and Co: Aspects of Landscape and Elements of Landscape. \nFor further images and information contact Elspeth Bray\, mail@moncrieff-bray.com \nTel: 07867 978 414      www.moncrieff-bray.com

SUMMARY:Summer Exhibition at Moncrieff Bray Gallery
DESCRIPTION:13 MAY – 23 JUNE 2023 \n\n\nOPENING WEEKEND\n\nFriday 6th May ~ 10am to 4 pm \nSaturday 7th May ~ 10am to 6.30 pm \nSunday 8th May ~ 10am to 6.30 pm \n\n\n\n\nOPEN THEREAFTER\n\nWednesday to Saturday \n10am to 4pm \nWe are always happy to see visitors by appointment \n\n\n\n40 artists and sculptors\, selected from Land’s End to Ullapool \nThe Moncrieff-Bray Gallery presents it’s Summer Exhibition in a converted barn and landscaped gardens with stunning views over the Rother Valley. Over 40 artists and sculptors are drawn from all corners of the British Isles. The work is selected with a commitment to quality\, integrity and originality from established and emerging artists alike. This is a wonderful opportunity to see a range of outstanding contemporary British sculpture in the heart of the South Downs National Park. There are small-scale intimate works for interiors as well as stunning large pieces for the garden. Established 18 years ago\, the Summer Exhibition has become a highlight in the West Sussex art calendar. \nWe are absolutely delighted to be exhibiting an important group of works by Jill Berelowitz\, one of Britain’s most exciting contemporary sculptors\, including her Diver. The Diver has evolved from Jill’s Diving Girl commissioned for the Olympic Village in 2012.  Also on show are the maquettes for her 3.1 metre-high Emergence figures.  Born in South Africa\, the influence of tribal African art is reflected in her portrayal of the human form. Another central theme in Jill’s work is the tree. Her tree sculptures reflect the rhythm of nature and the cycle of life. The life-size Tree of Cherished Memories was commissioned last year  for the National Arboretum and two of her tree sculptures are included in the show. \nAlso exhibiting in Sussex for the first time are Lucy Lutyens\, Benjamin Lowsley-Williams and Gabriel Risso. Living on a medieval farm which has been in the family for generations\, Lucy’s abstract forms reflect the shapes and objects of her rural environment\, in particular iron and bronze age settlements.  Benji Lowsley-Willliams work also references humanity’s long history and the inherent properties of stone\, which he transforms from a state of rawness to a finely honed and polished art form. Gabriel Risso’s wall reliefs are mesmerising in their sense of stillness and balance and nod to the paintings of his Italian compatriot\, Morandi\, \nWe are also showcasing work by many other leading British contemporary stone carvers\, among them: Jonathan Loxley\, Paul Vanstone\, Dominic Welch\, Aly Brown and Jason Mulligan. Complementing these pieces are Jeremy Moulsdale’s fluid figures which echo the relationship between man and the elements\, Olivia Ferrier’s exquisite birds cast from found objects and Will Carr’s mesmeric kinetic works. \nWithin the gallery is a veritable treasure trove of paintings and smaller scale sculpture. The brilliant work of Scottish Colourists Jean B Martin and Ann Oram are complimented by the dynamic abstract landscapes of the South Downs by John Hitchens. Oona Campbell has created a group of new landscapes with her dramatic skies and Sussex artist Lucy Powell returns from a trip to Southern Italy with lyrical landscapes alongside her domestic still-lives. Exhibiting for the first time is Samantha Rudd whose muted palette and portrayal of the English countryside combine the nostalgia of the British Romantics with a refreshing modern take.  Sarah Bowman exhibits her luscious garden paintings. We are also delighted to have new work by some or our gallery favourites\, Jemma Powell\, Vivienne Williams\, Jo Aylward and St Ives artists Liz Hough\, Gareth Edwards and Rachel Reeves. \nThis is an exhibition which celebrates many of the finest aspects of contemporary British art\, which combined with its spectacular rural setting\, only five minutes from the antique and artistic hub of Petworth\, make it a unique destination. SUMMARY:Autumn Exhibition at Moncrieff Bray Gallery
DESCRIPTION:5 NOVEMBER – 24 DECEMBER \nOpening Weekend Friday 5th\, Saturday 6th\, and Sunday 7th November\, 10 am–5 pm \nFrom 10th November to 18th December: open Wednesday to Saturday\, 10 am–4 pm \nOn Thursday 23rd & Friday 24th December: open 10 am–4 pm \nOver 30 artists and sculptors from across the UK. \nThe Moncrieff-Bray Gallery presents its Autumn Exhibition\, which takes place in our converted barn and landscaped gardens with stunning views over the Rother Valley. Both the sculpture and the art respond and reflect the landscape. From the playful animal sculptures of Adam Binder to the sweeping sublimity of John Hitchens’ landscapes\, Moncrieff-Bray’s artists have a relationship with the organic and the natural. Artists and sculptors are drawn from all corners of the British Isles and work is selected with a commitment to quality\, integrity\, and originality from both established and emerging artists. \nWe are showing some new pieces from some of our long-standing artists. Diana Tonnison’s ceramics\, feature boxes filled with ceramic fruit\, vegetables\, and fish. We are also excited to be exhibiting a selection of John Hitchens’ Scottish work. Painted in the late 1960s and early 1970s\, they demonstrate Hitchens’ earlier approach to landscape painting\, with an emphasis on wide landscapes and dramatic skies. \nThe exhibition sees several exciting new artists to the gallery\, among them West Country artists David Mankin\,Paul Riley\, Elizabeth Hough\, and Sarah Bowman. The swing and flux of the Cornish landscape inform Mankin’s expressionistic abstract paintings. Inspired by the St Ives School\, Sarah Bowman’s distant landscapes are viewed through foreground windows\, framing the developing narrative of a distant view. \nIn the garden\, work by leading British contemporary stone carvers Paul Vanstone\, Dominic Welch\, and Aly Brown – all successful participants at the prestigious ‘On Form’ exhibition at Astall Manor – will lead the way.  Inside the gallery we will be featuring new work from Adam Binder\, Emma Maiden and Jason Mulligan.
