SUMMARY:Two Worlds Entwined: Annie Morris and Idris Khan at Newlands House Gallery
DESCRIPTION:11 FEBRUARY – 4 JUNE 2023 \nWednesday – Saturday 10am-5pm \nSunday 11am-4pm \nOur current Exhibition\, Two Worlds Entwined: Annie Morris and Idris Khan has been extended to the 4th June Book tickets\n\n\nThe artist couple’s work side by side for the first time in the U.K. \n‘Two Worlds Entwined: Annie Morris and Idris Khan’ will explore the artistic practices of Annie Morris and Idris Khan within the historic and intimate setting of Newlands House gallery. \nArtist Annie Morris’s multi-disciplinary practice draws on both personal experience and the history of art to create works of art noted for their energetic\, electric nature. Idris Khan\, drawing inspiration from the history of art and music as well as key philosophical and theological texts\, investigates memory\, creativity\, and the layering of experience. \nAn artist couple\, Annie and Idris were married in Dordogne in 2009. The exhibition will present\, for the first time in the UK\, the practice of this highly successful couple side by side\, exploring the relationship present in the works as the artists each looks inwardly and outwardly to find their inspiration and voice as they experience life together and filter it through their unique and distinct practices. \nThe show will transform Newlands House into the creative realm of Annie and Idris\, presenting both new works and historic pieces. Playful yet contemplative\, audiences will be invited to fall into the colours\, words\, thoughts\, and emotions stirred by the artworks and experience the atmosphere the couple conjures in their work. Bold and dynamic\, the contrast of the contemporary with the historic rooms of the gallery will provide a new context for the art\, one which mimics the familiar space of the home. \nTickets:  \nGeneral Admission (16 years and over): £14.50 \nChild Admission\, under 10 years is free. 10 years to 16 years: £7.25 \nNHS Staff £7.25 (ID required) \nStudents £7.25 (ID required) \nFamily ticket: (2 Adults + 2 Children): £30.00 \nNewlands House Gallery Pass £99.00 (free entry for the card member plus one guest for a year and 10% off at the HG Café. SUMMARY:The Indestructible Lee Miller" with Antony Penrose
DESCRIPTION:30 SEPTEMBER 2022 \n6.30pm – 9.00pm \n\n\nAbout Antony Penrose:\n\nHe grew up in Farleys Farm House\, the old Sussex farmhouse his parents used to occupy in the village of Chiddingly. Life was a perpetual arts congress where British artists like Henry Moore\, Eileen Agar\, Richard Hamilton\, John Craxton\, and Kenneth Armitage mixed with leading figures from Europe such as Max Ernst\, Joan Miró\, Jean Dubuffet and where Pablo Picasso visited in 1950.\n \nUnder the surface of what seemed one long hedonistic gathering\, there was a hive of activity and some of the great achievements in modern art of the last century had Farleys Farm House as their start point.\n \nAntony Penrose has written numerous books\, articles and two plays on the subject of his parents and their associates. Broadcasting includes BBC Radio 4 Women’s Hour\, Today and Front Row\, and on television he has appeared on BBC’s The One Show\, Flog It\, The Culture Show and on CNN. He is an accredited lecturer for The Arts Society\, lecturing widely in UK and overseas. He is known as a curator of photography\, and is an artist and film maker in his own right.\n\nFor more information visit: https://newlandshouse.gallery/events

SUMMARY:Newlands House Gallery is presenting Jake Auerbach presents 'FRANK' at Newlands House Gallery'
DESCRIPTION:8 JULY 2022 \n6.30pm – 8.00pm \nJoin us with Jake Auerbach for an exclusive screening of ‘FRANK’\, a 56 minute Film produced and directed by Jake Auerbach Films (2015) with a question-and-answer session afterwards at Newlands House Gallery at 6:30pm on the 8th of July. \nFrank Auerbach\, works seven days a week and has the reputation of being something of a hermit. In the past this has only been fairly true; he saw films\, went to the theatre and spent time with friends but these days he rarely leaves his small corner of North London. \nSo when an exhibition of his work opened in the Kunstmuseum Bonn in before travelling to Tate Britain\, film maker Jake Auerbach decided to go and film the show so that his father could see how it looked… they set up a projector and filmed his responses to seeing the work after a break of anything up to 60 years. \nThe result is a film that unfolds an obsessive painter’s personal manifesto (citing references as diverse as Morecambe & Wise\, Gauguin and Shakespeare) which is woven into the relationship between father and son. \nFriday 8th July\, 2022\n6:30pm \nIn Person event at Newlands House Gallery \nTickets:\nLocation: Newlands House\, Pound Street\, GU28 0DX \nBook Tickets Here.

SUMMARY:Frank Auerbach: Unseen at Newlands House Gallery
DESCRIPTION:2 APRIL –  14 AUGUST 2022 \nWednesday – Saturday 10am-5pm \nSunday 11am-4pm \nNewlands House Gallery will celebrate the renowned German-British artist Frank Auerbach with an exhibition of works spanning over 60 years of his prolific career \nBook Tickets \n\n\nOpening 2nd April\, Newlands House Gallery presents ‘Frank Auerbach: Unseen’ that will explore the evolution of the contemporary painter’s practice with a collection of over 65 works\, including nine paintings\, etchings\, drawings and Drypoint prints. Presented within Newlands House Gallery’s Georgian building in the historic town of Petworth\, on display will be works spanning from the 1950s to present day that portray Auerbach as a tireless creator\, while reflecting on the influences and relationships that have informed his striking style. A collection of works by the artist\, on loan from the Tate\, will also be displayed together for the first time in 30 years. \nFrank Auerbach (b.1931) is renowned for his resonant figurative works that are defined by rich texture and depth. Auerbach’s works are created by a relentless process of painting a canvas before scraping away to start again\, which is a technique that he undertakes multiple times to complete works in one sitting. Frank Auerbach: Unseen will unravel the development of this unique practice with a large collection of works presented chronologically\, including loans from the National Gallery\, Tate\, and Fitzwilliam Museum. \nThe exhibition will offer an intimate insight into Auerbach’s career and begins with the artist’s portraits of close friends including Lucian Freud\, Leon Kossoff and a large oil painting of Estelle Stella Olive West (E.O.W) – a frequent female model for the artist. Early etchings dating to the 1950s drawn by Auerbach at art school\, will stand alongside later works by a matured Auerbach in the 1980s. These capture the intense experience of sitting for an artist with an indefatigable practice like Auerbach’s. Etchings of his wife\, Julia\, depict her reclining form\, while the thickly layered paint on Head of E.O.W I (1960)\, is indicative of the length of time Auerbach spent overpainting this work. \nThe influence of Auerbach’s important relationships with the Old Masters that preceded him and a discreet collector\, David Wilke\, will also be examined. Wilke’s collection of commissioned paintings will be on display together for the first time in 30 years since bequeathed to the Tate in 1993. This includes Auerbach’s renowned oil paintings of Bacchus and Ariadne (1971)\, based on Titian’s classical work\, and Rimbaud (1975-6) that depicts the 19th century French poet in the Cornaro Chapel\, Rome. This work is the result of the pair’s playful relationship upheld between the art-admirer and artist. Auerbach denied Wilke’s initial request to paint Bernini’s ‘Ecstasy of St Teresa’ in the Roman chapel yet responded by transplanting Rimbaud into the setting for this later commission. \nBook Tickets in advance here.

SUMMARY:Julian Opie: Collected Works/Works Collected at Newlands House Gallery
DESCRIPTION:6 NOVEMBER 2021 –  6 MARCH 2022 \n \nWednesday – Saturday 10am-5pm \nSunday 11am-4pm \n\n\n\n\nOpening 6 November\, Newlands House Gallery presents Julian Opie: Collected Works/Works Collected\, showcasing over 100 objects from the contemporary British artist’s personal collection\, ranging from the ancient world to the present day\, alongside a selection of his own sculptures\, paintings and films. Presented in the historic market town of Petworth in Newlands House Gallery’s Georgian building\, the exhibition offers a unique opportunity for visitors to see how Opie’s interests and journey as a collector\, inform the art he makes himself. \nJulian Opie is internationally recognised for his distinctive and refined drawing style\, distilling the visual information of our everyday reality to a universal language of symbols and signs\, reflecting his preoccupation with the idea of representation\, and the means by which images are perceived and understood. A wide range of techniques are visible throughout Opie’s work – from cutting-edge LCD technology to mosaic\, beadwork and engraved stone – and are presented here in dialogue with the artworks that have inspired them. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOpie writes: “Spookily often\, when I am stuck for decisions\, I get up and look at some other art and find a solution right there. The work of others pushes me beyond what I know and assume\, it suggests new logics and approaches and makes me feel not so alone in this strange endeavour.” \nIn a multifarious and dynamic display\, the exhibition includes Ancient Greek and Roman statuary\, Egyptian sarcophagi\, Japanese Ukiyo-e woodblocks\, beaded sun hats\, armour and Indonesian ancestral figures\, alongside original manga sketches from Studio Ghibli and contemporary works by\, amongst others\, Kara Walker\, Chuck Close\, Roy Lichtenstein and Sol LeWitt. \nCarefully curated within the architecture and domestic space of Newlands House Gallery\, the exhibition also provides an intimate visual map of Opie’s interior world. The works are not organised chronologically\, instead they are curated to reflect the inquisitive mind of the artist; everyday scenes of Japanese women by Kitagawa Utamaro are positioned alongside Opie’s animated LCD portrait Ruth smoking 2 (2006); Augustin Edouart’s silhouette portraits of Victorian families are presented together with Opie’s own silhouettes from 2010\, depicting both his own family and friends and The Gallery Staff; in the garden\, recent metal sculptures Deer 2 and Dog 4 (2020) are installed alongside Yoko XIX (2006) by Don Brown. Opie’s portrait paintings and 3D sculpture are shown together with old Master paintings by Joshua Reynolds and a variety of helmets meant both for recreation and battle. These unconventional combinations offer in insight into his ongoing artistic endeavour\, steeped in the visual and material languages of the past; a conversation spanning hundreds and thousands of years and continuing on into the future. \nNewlands House is a new gallery inspired by the historic associations of Petworth and Sussex with great artists\, writers and designers from times past. It seeks to reinvigorate this legacy with the vitality of modern and contemporary art and design shaping contemporary culture. In the intimacy of a converted home\, Newlands House sits at the centre of Sussex’s burgeoning cultural scene\, spanning museums\, art centres\, festivals\, vineyards\, nature trails and stately homes. In 2020\, the gallery opened to great acclaim with two inaugural exhibitions\, a tribute to Helmut Newton and a survey of top works by designer\, architect and artist Ron Arad. Set in the heart of the South Downs\, Newlands House invites visitors to engage with the work of the greatest artists in an unexpected\, Georgian setting\, contrasting to white cube environments the art historical canon is predominantly presented in.

SUMMARY:Joan Miró. la Gran Belleza At Newlands House Gallery
DESCRIPTION:1st MAY –  4th JULY \nOne of the twentieth century’s most celebrated artists\, Joan Miró’s magical universe is explored in this intimate exhibition spanning 50 years of creative production. \nJoan Miró i Ferrà (Barcelona\, 1893 – Palma de Mallorca\, 1983) is one of the twentieth century’s most celebrated artists\, whose influence and legacy continues to be ever-present in our times today. Painter\, sculptor and ceramicist\, his lifelong playful flirtation with abstraction and geometry have secured his place in the pantheon of art history. \nAvoiding categorisation\, neither cubist\, surrealist nor abstract artist\, this exhibition aims to take a journey through more than 50 years of the artist’s creative production. The tour begins in 1931\, with a small figurative painting in which one can identify the beginning of that unique visual language characteristic of Miró. It ends in 1981 with a series of engravings that boast the wealth of his creative universe. The exhibition features his paintings\, sculptures\, engravings\, and drawings\, presenting the progression of his style as he ‘honed in’ on his artistic voice. This survey show is an intimate walk-through Miró’s colourful career. \n\n\n\n\n \nNewlands House\, \nPound Street\,\nPetworth\, \nWest Sussex\, \nGU28 0DX \n01798 65 1002 \nenquiries@newlandshouse.gallery \nRESERVATION \nWednesday – Saturday 10am-5pm \nSunday 11am-4pm \nStudent concessions \nAvailable Weds – Fri

SUMMARY:Ron Arad 69 at Newlands Gallery
DESCRIPTION:NOW – 7 MARCH 2021\nA survey of significant works by the pioneering artist\, architect and industrial designer. Curated by the gallery’s Artistic Director\, Simon de Pury\, this is the gallery’s debut exhibition devoted to design. \n‘RON ARAD 69’ features early works from the 1980s and 1990s alongside pieces from the past two decades\, including unseen releases for 2020\, presented against the historic backdrop of the gallery’s Georgian townhouse setting. Timed with the artist’s 69th birthday this year\, the exhibition features approximately 50 studio pieces\, many of which have been exhibited around the world\, including at the Centre Pompidou\, Paris; The Museum of Modern Art (MoMa)\, New York; the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A)\, London; and the Royal Academy of Arts\, London alongside works that have never been showed publicly before. \nRon Arad is one of the all-time greats in the world of design and architecture\, similar to the way Helmut Newton – the subject of our previous exhibition at Newlands House – was in photography. I greatly look forward to seeing the contrast between the 18th century architecture of the gallery and the resolutely 21st century feel of Arad’s dazzling and bold works – \nSimon de Pury\, Artistic Director\, Newlands House.\n\nProminent works within the exhibition include Now What\, 2020\, which makes its first public appearance following a virtual launch earlier this year. Otherwise known as the ‘Brexit chair’\, Now What commemorates the day the UK left the EU\, with every single newspaper published on 31st January 2020 printed across the chair’s surface. Recognisable pieces from the 2000s\, such as Gomli\, 2008 (red gelcoat)\, Gomli\, 2009 (polished stainless steel)\, are exhibited outdoors\, in the grounds of Newlands House while the galleries 12 rooms will exhibit iconic works in stainless steel and polished aluminium from throughout his career.   Works from Ron Arad’s collaboration with Murano glass masters Venini\, several presented here for the first time\, are also on show at the gallery. \nA survey of significant works by the pioneering artist\, architect and industrial designer. Curated by the gallery’s Artistic Director\, Simon de Pury\, this is the gallery’s debut exhibition devoted to design. \nNewlands House\, \nPound Street\,Petworth\, \nWest Sussex\, \nGU28 0DX \n01798 65 1002 \nenquiries@newlandshouse.gallery \nRESERVATION \nWednesday – Saturday 10am-5pm \nSunday 11am-4pm \nStudent concessions \nAvailable Weds – Fri
