SUMMARY:Lunatraktors + special guests
DESCRIPTION:25 SEPTEMBER 2026 \n7.45pm – 10.00pm \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPercussive\, theatrical folk re-imagining old songs for new times \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe are delighted to welcome back Lunatraktors – choreographer and percussionist Carli Jefferson (she/her)\, and vocalist and researcher Clair Le Couteur (they/them). \nBeginning from the bare bones of vocal harmony and percussive dance\, Lunatraktors rework Anglo-Celtic traditional music from the 1500s to the present\, approaching folk music as performance art. They are known for their primal\, ritualistic sound\, expanding into weird\, playful spaces with acoustic beats\, analogue synth basslines\, whistles and bass accordion. \nAncient and contemporary\, mournful and joyously deranged\, Lunatraktors are ‘simply different’ (RTÉ Lyric FM\, Ireland)

SUMMARY:Kate Griffin & Matchume Zango + Stylusboy
DESCRIPTION:25 JUNE 2026 \n7.45pm – 10.00pm \n\n\n\n\n\n\nVibrant world music from the UK and Mozambique \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nKate Griffin first came to Petworth Sessions last November with her band Mishra and Deepa Shakthi\, which was one of the best nights we’ve ever put on. At the time\, we promised we’d bring her back\, and this is Phase 1 of our plan to do so. \nFor this project\, Kate (on banjo) and Matchume Zango (Mozambique multi-instrumentalist) bring their wonderful cross-cultural collaboration that celebrates the universal power of traditional music. Both weave echoes of their respective traditions to their vibrant sound full of world rhythms\, contemporary song-writing and joy. \nKate and Matchume are both experienced collaborators in their own right and the binding force of their collaboration is freedom to explore genres on their traditional instruments: for Kate the clawhammer banjo and Matchume the timbila. Matchume is a renowned international artist working in performance\, theatre\, dance and film\, and has recorded several albums with Timbila Muzimba\, MoSomeBigNoise\, Kubilai Khan and Forest Jam. With lineage from Zavala\, Inhambane Province\, the centre of Mozambique’s timbila tradition\, he is regarded as one of the new masters of timbila. \nThey will be joined on stage by Mishra bandmate Ford Collier on guitar\, whistle and percussion.

SUMMARY:Dan Whitehouse & Gustaf Ljunggren
DESCRIPTION:25 OCTOBER 2025 \n7.45pm – 10.00pm \nKnown for his reflective\, genre-defying artistry\, Dan Whitehouse plays with styles from ambient\, indie and electro to folk\, while embracing the living poetry of the spoken word. Dan says\, “I write folk songs\, but not folk music.” \nHis acclaimed albums The Glass Age and Voices From The Cones explore the challenges of communicating in our screen-fixated society – while commemorating the rich history of the glassmaking community in the West Midlands. In A Night Of Glass\, Dan takes us deep into the heart of glass\, mining a wealth of emotions and ideas. \nDan Whitehouse is an award-winning UK artist living between Tokyo and Wolverhampton. Swedish multi-instrumentalist Gustaf Ljunggren is flying in from Copenhagen to join Dan for this show. Ljunggren also brings music from his latest album\, Mikroklima. \n“Subtle and delicate melodies” — The Sunday Times

SUMMARY:The Little Unsaid
DESCRIPTION:9 OCTOBER 20205 \n7.45pm – 10.00pm \n\n\n\n\n\nThe Little Unsaid are a diverse four-piece whose songwriting and impassioned performances have earned them a reputation as a must-see live act. \nLed by John Elliott\, they have drawn sell-out audiences to the band’s last three UK tours. \nAfter 10 years of touring and making records that take in alt.folk\, post-rock and electronica with a line-up including synths\, strings and drums\, the London/Aarhus-based band have now made their most expansive yet deeply personal record to date\, capturing improvised songs recorded on a converted lightship on the Thames. \nAnd they’re renewing their connection with live audiences with energised shows featuring the new material throughout the UK – including\, to our good fortune\, Petworth. If you were there for their show two years ago\, you’ll know what we mean when we say: this one will be special. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Bold & different… Joni Mitchell\, Roy Harper\, a touch of Radiohead… stretches boundaries” The Guardian \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n“Stunning… if Nick Cave were a small man from Yorkshire and sang his anxiety dreams in falsetto\, it would sound something like this” The Line of Best Fit

SUMMARY:Lunatraktors + special guest
DESCRIPTION:6 JUNE 2025 \n7.45pm – 10.30pm \nWe close out our Spring Season with a genuinely unique concert. There is literally nobody else like these guys\, and we’re so happy that we’ve finally landed them. \nLunatraktors are choreographer and percussionist Carli Jefferson\, and nonbinary vocalist and composer Clair Le Couteur. Influenced by flamenco\, post-punk\, and trip-hop\, they strip back traditional folk to rhythm and voice performed with fascinating theatricality. The pair turned heads in 2019 when their DIY debut This Is Broken Folk – recorded live in a viaduct arch by Ramsgate harbour – made it onto MOJO Magazine’s Top Ten Folk Albums. \nTheir newer work blends analogue synth\, whistles\, accordion with tuned drums\, vocal harmonies\, and a hybrid of tap dance and body percussion\, which Jefferson developed after touring with Stomp. A double act in the old-fashioned sense\, Le Couteur’s channeling voices of multiple tragi-comic characters match Jefferson’s hyper-expressive performance style.

SUMMARY:The Burning Glass + special guest
DESCRIPTION:9 MAY 2025 \n7.45pm – 10.30pm \nPeople often stop us in the street and ask if we will bring back certain bands to Petworth again where we’ve had a particularly brilliant night. A regular conversation goes like this – “When will you get that tall guy with the ukulele back where we all danced\, what an amazing night”. The answer is now. We loved them too. \nAs a reminder\, The Burning Glass are a six piece acoustic band that play powerful storytelling pop music that makes you want to dance. Edwin Brooks (the tall guy with the ukulele) writes songs that tell stories and make people laugh dance and sometimes cry. The band\, and what a band they are\, bring together musicians from classical\, jazz and folk backgrounds using tuned percussion\, ukulele\, bass\, electric guitar\, drums and lots of singing to bring these songs to life. Over the last decade the band have built a cult following UK festival circuit\, and they are firm favourites at Glastonbury.
