Friday Street band cover a range of music from artists such as David Bowie\, The Doors\, REM\, The Buzzcocks\, Roxy Music\, The Who\, The Beatles and Talking Heads (to name but a few!). Historically\, mummers’ plays consisted of informal groups of costumed community members that visited from house to house on various holidays. There are various traditions of Mumming\, plays are known as a “Robin Hood” play or a “George and Dragon” play.Another style is a “Wooing” play where a young man courts a Lady but is rejected and he is persuaded to join the army The Lady then accepts the hand of a Clown or Fool. However\, Prize Old Mummers have reversed the role and in our play the Woman tries it on with King George\, failing that\, the Foreign Knight\, The Devil or even The Doctor. This plot in then interwoven with the George and Dragon tale.Prize Old Mummers are so called because the magic elixir used by the Doctor to raise the dead combatants is a bottle of Prize Old Ale\, formerly brewed by George Gale and Co of Horndean. The brewery ceased trading in 2006 but the name of their very fine barley wine lives on in the name of our mumming side.The play\, while having a very traditional appearance\, is littered with references to current affairs and issues of the day. References to popular culture\, environmental issues and political satire are used. Dressed in tatter costumes with faces obscured in many shades and colours\, they endeavour to keep alive a tradition while raising funds for charity.

DESCRIPTION:5 APRIL 2024 \n10.00am – 12.00pm \n\nOn this short walk from Langham Brewery I will be handing over the navigation reins to the children. However\, don’t get too alarmed\, I will be ensuring they don’t go too far off piste\, and we will still make it back to the brewery in time for lunch.\nBefore we set off we will be getting our bearings and talking a little about local geography and maps. Each child will then hopefully have the opportunity to lead a section of the walk\, with guidance. However\, everyone has a role to play on this walk as we’ll be creating maps from what we observe along the way. In today’s world\, where tech rules\, we have all lost our internal compass. This walk hopes to redress the balance a little by helping the children become more aware of their surroundings and direction. Along the way\, there will also be things to find and learn about the local area. Perhaps the adults will learn something too!

Please save the date\, and do pop back soon for further details.\nLive Music will be provided by Saxophonist Martin Gray + Wavy Day + more.\nThe event is free to enjoy and we’ll be collecting for LGBT+ Switchboard.\nLGBT+ Switchboard is a confidential helpline that provides support on the phone\, email and instant messaging. It’s a safe space for anyone to discuss anything\, including sexuality\, gender identity\, sexual health and emotional well-being.\nIt’s a volunteer-run helpline that’s existed since the 1970s and remains a vital resource for thousands of people across the UK. People who may be feeling isolated in their community\, they may be coming out and want to talk to someone who has been through it\, they may have an issue that is concerning them and need to talk it through with somebody who won’t judge them\, or they may just need to know where they can meet other people in their area. DESCRIPTION:23 APRIL 2022 \n10.00am – 6.30pm \n\nJoin us at the Taproom for our St George’s Day celebrations\, with live music\, wonderful food\, and of course\, an award-winning bar.\nWe’ll have chilled saxophone sessions with Martin Gray – he’ll be sharing his atmospheric\, jazz styling with us from 1pm.\nFood choices will include Ploughman’s Lunches with chutneys (made with Langham’s Best Bitter)\, Nellies scotch eggs (original\, chilli or garlic)\, wonderful breads from hygge bakery Sodt\, cheeses and pickles etc.\nPlease reserve your Ploughmans by emailing the brewery by 18th April office@langhambrewery.co.uk\nFree entry – it’s all part of the service!\nPlease give generously\, as we’ll be collecting for Sunflower Ukraine.\nWe have plenty of free parking available and are wheelchair friendly.\nA little about St George:\nSaint George is the official patron saint of England\, and is famous from the legend and painting that have him slaying a dragon. Saint George is believed to have been a Roman soldier who hailed from Cappadocia\, in modern day Turkey\, and who died a martyr’s death in Roman Palestine in A.D. 303. He is said to have been tortured and then beheaded during the persecution under Emperor Diocletian.\nMany legends revolve around Saint George. He is credited with undergoing almost every type of torture that you can name and also with dying and coming back to life three times before being beheaded. And his legends and great popularity have made Saint George the patron saint not only of England but of about a dozen nations and regions in total.\nSaint George’s Day is dated on 23 April as that is supposed to be the day of his martyrdom.

DESCRIPTION:16 APRIL 2022 \n5.00pm – 10.00pm \n\nIt’s a very happy birthday to us!\nOur taproom is a year old today (Saturday 16th April) and we’ll be celebrating with live music from Wavy Davy and friends\, a hog roast\, plus BBQ loaded chips\, via our friends at Simply Hog Roast (delicious veggie options available) and a well-stocked\, award-winning bar.\nWe’ll have games available – cornhole and bar skittles – face painting and Easter egg hunts.\nWhy not join us? We’d love to welcome you and your families and friends.\nThis is a free-to-enjoy event\, but we’ll be collecting for the David Nott Foundation. Please do bring your loose change (and notes) to donate to this extremely worth-while cause.\n\n\nOver the weekend of 4th\, 5th & 6th March\, David Nott\, the founder of the foundation\, trained 579 Ukrainian doctors\, a crash course of twelve hours\, teaching them the essential skills they will need to cope with the injuries being sustained by both fighters and civilians in this hellish war.\nThe training courses are highly specialised and David is the world’s most experienced trauma surgeon. The foundation has led training courses worldwide and saved millions of lives through the snowball effect\, as the surgeons then go on to train others and so on. \nMore details of the work can be found on the David Nott Foundation website above\, and we also recommend listening on Radio 4 catch up to David on Desert Island Discs\, 2016. \n\n\nPlease do check back too\, as we’ll add further details about our happy birthday to us celebrations soon.
