DESCRIPTION:1 NOVEMBER 2025 – 19 APRIL 2026 \nWednesday to Saturday 10.00am – 5.00pm\nSunday 11.00am – 4.00pm \nJane Bown: Play Shadow offers an intimate portrait of one of Britain’s most revered photographers\, Jane Bown (1925–2014)\, whose quietly powerful black-and-white portraits have become iconic within the canon of twentieth-century photography. \nThe exhibition expands beyond the familiar public image of Bown’s work to reveal the deeply personal vision and consistent philosophy that guided her practice: a belief in simplicity\, natural light\, and the decisive presence of a good face. \nBown’s mastery lay in her ability to work quickly\, intuitively\, and with minimal equipment\, most famously\, her Olympus OM-1 and either an 85mm for close up portraits or a 55mm lens when she wanted context for the sitter. Her reliance on natural light\, often soft and north-facing\, created striking chiaroscuro effects that gave her portraits psychological depth and subtle drama. Play Shadow gestures both to the technical precision with which Bown orchestrated light and to the emotional resonance and mystery she was able to draw out of her subjects\, often within moments of meeting them. \nRecognised for photographing cultural icons from Samuel Beckett to Queen Elizabeth II\, Bown was nonetheless uninterested in celebrity. Her images stripped away artifice\, offering instead an honest\, often vulnerable glimpse into the human behind the persona. A photograph of Anthony Blunt\, taken before the public revelation of his espionage\, has since been seen as eerily prescient\, light and shadow working not just as aesthetic choices but as metaphors for truth and concealment. \nBown also photographed some of the most influential artists of the twentieth century\, including Henry Moore\, Paula Rego\, David Hockney\, and Francis Bacon. This exhibition will feature not only Bown’s portraits of these figures but also selected works by the artists themselves\, creating a dynamic conversation between sitter and maker\, photograph and artwork. \nJane Bown: Play Shadow celebrates her lasting connection to the region and to future generations of image-makers. An alumna of the Guildford School of Art -UK’s only full-time photography course at the time\, directed by Ifor Thomas- now part of the University for the Creative Arts (UCA)\, Bown’s legacy continues to inspire. Current UCA students have been invited to respond to her work\, with selected contemporary pieces\, and interventions\,  included in the exhibition to reflect on her enduring influence. \nThis exhibition gathers a selection photographs\, some rarely shown\, across several thematic groupings that explore Bown’s approach to composition\, light\, and emotional presence. DESCRIPTION:7 JUNE – 14 SEPTEMBER 2025 \nWednesday to Saturday 10.00am – 5.00pm \nSunday 11.00am – 4.00pm \n“Andy Warhol: My True Story”\, curated by Jean Wainwright at Newlands House offers a fresh perspective on Andy Warhol in an intimate presentation of drawings\, prints\, photographs\, recordings\, films\, and archival paraphernalia. \nFrom drawings such as Man with Hearts and a fictitious One Million Dollar Bill\, screenprints including Mona Lisa (Four times)\, photographs by contemporaries like Bob Adelman’s Andy Warhol Empties his Boots after being Pushed into the Pool by Edie Sedgewick\, and an intimate film of his mother\, we glimpse a very human Warhol experimenting with ideas and subject matter. Warhol was an inveterate collector and observer\, and his early drawings reveal both his fascination with the ordinary and the way he processed and communicated his subject matter in his own particular style\, developing themes which recur and evolve in his later works. \nThe exhibition intertwines artworks\, photographs\, objects and artefacts with reflective recordings of his entourage\, those closest to him\, and his family. What is revealed is an elusive and private man\, hiding behind a public party-going persona\, with his wig and dark glasses and provocative soundbites\, creator of his Factories and iconic artworks and producer of the Velvet Underground. His prescience and lasting influence are also witnessed through artworks by contemporary artists such as Gavin Turk and Rob and Nick Carter\, his “brand” exemplified through Warhol-themed objects and memorabilia. In this intimate and personal show\, we experience Warhol in different ways as each room reveals a facet of him as well as those he inspired. \nThe domestic spaces of Newlands House Gallery\, a Grade II-listed 18th Century townhouse\, seem fitting for an exhibition that offers unexpected narratives on one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. \nJean Wainwright\, an internationally recognised Warhol expert\, is a London-based art historian\, critic and curator. Her work most prominently features interviews with international artists\, photographers\, filmmakers\, and curators. As a writer and academic\, her interviews can be found in the numerous books\, catalogues\, monologues\, and peer-reviewed journals\, and she has appeared widely in the media\, including national radio and television. A Professor of Contemporary Art and Photography at the University for the Creative Arts\, Wainwright has a particular interest in authenticity in the artist interview and finding the artist’s “voice”.

Known for his intricate map illustrations and keen eye for detail\, Adam Dant offers a unique lens into the quirks and culture of everyday life\, blending history with the present in works that are as humorous as they are thought-provoking. \n\n\n\n\n\nTaking as their theme the vivid and arcane origin myths of Britain\, the latest works by renowned cartographer Adam Dant revive the long lost art of ‘The Painted Cloth’ and the role of The Painter Stainer in context of British Contemporary Art. \nOnce a common alternative to tapestries\, decorative wall paintings and panelling\, The Painted Cloths commissioned from The Worshipful Company of The Painter-Stainers would have hung in the palaces of the nobility as well as in the modest homes of folk who nonetheless could also interpret and appreciate the classical\, biblical and mythological themes depicted and described in bright layers of colour and lively\, cursive line. \nInspired by the work of The London Society of Antiquaries Adam Dant animates objects and images from its collection across several large painted cloths to render for the modern world\, stories which would have been familiar as subject matter to the likes of Inigo Jones\, Ben Jonson and Henry Purcell before the medium was superseded by wallpapers and various other decorative contingencies. \nOrigin stories such as those described by Geoffrey of Monmouth in his pseudo-history of the lineage of British Rulers include how Brutus and his Trojans founded New Troy on the banks of The Thames\, how the disembodied head of ‘Bran The Blessed’ came to be buried at The White Hill as one of the nations ‘Palladiums’ as well as how a race of monstrous giants came to be wandering the islands of Albion. \nThese stories have also inspired Dant in his current role as official artist to The Lord Mayor of London 2024/25. \nIn addition to these impressive and engaging paintings is a display of Adam Dant’s latest associated maps and charts which further explore and reveal the colliding and coalescing common histories of British mythology. These include a convincing lineage of British rulers tracing the monarchy of King Charles lll directly back to the Greek God Zeus\, personifications of ‘The Guardians of London’s Lost Rivers’ as well as cartographic guides to all manner of mythic realms\, Theatrical\, Criminal and Crypto-Zoological. \nSeveral events are planned whereby the artist will reveal in conversation and practical display the details of his methods\, motivations and inspirations.

DESCRIPTION:12 JULY 26 OCTOBER 2024 \nWednesday to Saturday 10am – 5pm \nSunday 11am – 4pm \n\n\n\nIn May 2024 Leonora Carrington became the most successful female artist in UK history\, in terms of sales: her painting Les Distractions de Dagobert (1945) was sold at Sotheby’s in New York for USD$28.5 million. \nHer legacy is now on a new footing.  Last year\, the Wall Street Journal predicted she would be the next Frida Kahlo.  Like Kahlo\, Carrington’s life was as surreal as her paintings; like Kahlo\, she drew heavily on her own extraordinary experiences in her work.\nFor many years\, this eventful life story – especially her love affair with Max Ernst\, and her spell in a Spanish asylum\, which fascinated others in her Surrealist circles – have been central to discussions of her work.  But Carrington was no muse.  As she said: “I didn’t have time to be anyone’s muse… I was too busy rebelling against my family and learning to be an artist.” \n\n\n\nLeonora Carrington: Rebel Visionary (12 July – 26 October) will re-examine her work in the light of her posthumous success.  An artist who broke boundaries and created imaginative new worlds. Carrington was – like all the greats – a creator in many different directions.  As her long-time friend and patron Edward James said:  “She…never relinquished her love of experimentation; the results being that she [was] able to diversity and explore a hundred or more techniques for the expression of her creative powers.” \nThis summer\, Newlands House Gallery in Petworth\, Sussex brings together a wide range of Carrington’s work\, to show the span of her output across a wide range of media. Loans will include a wall of masks; a series of masks made for a theatrical production of The Tempest in the 1950s; original lithographs; tapestries; sketches; sculptures; jewellery – and of course paintings.  Together they will show the full range of Carrington’s prolific and original output\, across a career that spanned eight decades. \nAs the feminist art collective The Guerrilla Girls wryly commented\, being a woman artist comes with certain advantages: these include being able to work without the pressures of success\, and discovering your career picks up in your eighties. \nToday\, more than a decade after her death in May 2011\, Carrington’s time has come.  Newlands House Gallery will focus on the breadth\, the variety and the extraordinary imagination of work across her eight-decade career.   \n– Joanna Moorhead\, Exhibition Curator

SINK / RISE\, Chapter Three was photographed in Fiji in 2023. \nThe people in the photos have all been badly affected by climate change\, from extreme droughts to floods that destroyed their homes and livelihoods. \nSINK / RISE is the third chapter of The Day May Break\, an ongoing global series portraying people and animals that have been impacted by environmental degradation and destruction. \nThis third chapter focuses on South Pacific Islanders impacted by rising oceans from climate change. \nThe local people in these photos\, photographed underwater in the ocean off the coast of the Fijian islands\, are representatives of the many people whose homes\, land and livelihoods will be lost in the coming decades as the water rises. \nEverything is shot in-camera underwater.

Idris Khan\, drawing inspiration from the history of art and music as well as key philosophical and theological texts\, investigates memory\, creativity\, and the layering of experience. \nAn artist couple\, Annie and Idris were married in Dordogne in 2009. The exhibition will present\, for the first time in the UK\, the practice of this highly successful couple side by side\, exploring the relationship present in the works as the artists each looks inwardly and outwardly to find their inspiration and voice as they experience life together and filter it through their unique and distinct practices. \nThe show will transform Newlands House into the creative realm of Annie and Idris\, presenting both new works and historic pieces. DESCRIPTION:18 NOVEMBER 2022 \n 6:30pm – 9.30pm \n\n\n\n\nAbout Colin Wiggins:\n\n\n\n\nColin Wiggins began his career at the British Museum before moving to the National Gallery\, where he worked for over 30 years as Head of Education and Special Projects Curator. During his time there he was responsible for the Associate Artist scheme\, inviting contemporary artists such as Peter Blake\, Michael Landy and Ana Maria Pacheco to become involved in the life of the Gallery and to exhibit their work there. In 2009 he worked on the exhibition Picasso: Challenging the Past at the National Gallery.\n\n\nDuring his time at the National Gallery\, he also curated exhibitions of work by artists such as Frank Auerbach\, Bridget Riley\, Lucian Freud and Sean Scully. He has many publications to his name and has lectured widely in Europe and the USA and is currently working on a catalogue raisonné of the paintings of Lucian Freud. He also works as a printmaker and has work in several public collections including the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge and the British Museum.

DESCRIPTION:30 SEPTEMBER 2022 \n6.30pm – 9.00pm \n\n\nAbout Antony Penrose:\n\nHe grew up in Farleys Farm House\, the old Sussex farmhouse his parents used to occupy in the village of Chiddingly. Life was a perpetual arts congress where British artists like Henry Moore\, Eileen Agar\, Richard Hamilton\, John Craxton\, and Kenneth Armitage mixed with leading figures from Europe such as Max Ernst\, Joan Miró\, Jean Dubuffet and where Pablo Picasso visited in 1950.\n \nUnder the surface of what seemed one long hedonistic gathering\, there was a hive of activity and some of the great achievements in modern art of the last century had Farleys Farm House as their start point.\n \nAntony Penrose has written numerous books\, articles and two plays on the subject of his parents and their associates. Broadcasting includes BBC Radio 4 Women’s Hour\, Today and Front Row\, and on television he has appeared on BBC’s The One Show\, Flog It\, The Culture Show and on CNN. He is an accredited lecturer for The Arts Society\, lecturing widely in UK and overseas. DESCRIPTION:8 JULY 2022 \n6.30pm – 8.00pm \nJoin us with Jake Auerbach for an exclusive screening of ‘FRANK’\, a 56 minute Film produced and directed by Jake Auerbach Films (2015) with a question-and-answer session afterwards at Newlands House Gallery at 6:30pm on the 8th of July. \nFrank Auerbach\, works seven days a week and has the reputation of being something of a hermit. In the past this has only been fairly true; he saw films\, went to the theatre and spent time with friends but these days he rarely leaves his small corner of North London. \nSo when an exhibition of his work opened in the Kunstmuseum Bonn in before travelling to Tate Britain\, film maker Jake Auerbach decided to go and film the show so that his father could see how it looked… they set up a projector and filmed his responses to seeing the work after a break of anything up to 60 years. \nThe result is a film that unfolds an obsessive painter’s personal manifesto (citing references as diverse as Morecambe & Wise\, Gauguin and Shakespeare) which is woven into the relationship between father and son. \nFriday 8th July\, 2022\n6:30pm \nIn Person event at Newlands House Gallery \nTickets:\nLocation: Newlands House\, Pound Street\, GU28 0DX \nBook Tickets Here.
