SUMMARY:Town & Country Exhibition at Ottocento
DESCRIPTION:21 SEPTEMBER – 26 OCTOBER 2024 \nMonday: By appointment \nTuesday: 10am – 5pm \nWednesday: 10am – 5pm \nThursday: 10am – 5pm \nFriday: 10am – 5pm \nSaturday: 10am – 4pm \nSunday: Closed \nThis visual journey through time showcases a curated selection of works by various artists from the 17th to the 20th Century. The exhibition delves into the dynamic tension between urban life and rural landscapes\, capturing the essence of human experience in both bustling cities and tranquil countrysides. \nWe will curate the exhibition to highlight the contrast between old and new\, pairing a work by Claude Joseph Vernet\, the master of the Grand Tour\, with modern pieces\, including Bryan Ingham’s striking abstract collage. Both works are inspired by the Italian landscape but differ greatly in essence. The exhibition will also feature a collection of mid-century works by Phyllis Bray\, showcasing woodland and coastal scenes\, alongside three depictions of London by Gerald Rose\, focusing on The Regent’s Canal in the late 1950s. \nOur most recent acquisition is a significant piece by the surrealist artist and poet Bruno Capacci\, titled Comedia dell’Arte (1935)\, which depicts entertainers in an Italian square. Capacci\, who was married to Suzanne van Damme\, befriended and exhibited with many of the greatest artists of his time\, including Jules Breton\, Giacometti\, Cocteau\, Ernst\, Man Ray\, Calder\, Miró\, Marcel Duchamp\, Federico Fellini\, Gorky\, Picabia\, and Tanguy\, among others. This early work is one of his most important\, reflecting both his admiration for the perspective of Renaissance masters and his engagement with the modern avant-garde. \nThe exhibition will run until 26th October.  We look forward to welcoming you.

SUMMARY:Ewart Johns - A Life of Art at Ottocento
DESCRIPTION:2 SEPTEMBER – 20 OCTOBER 2023  \nThurs: 10.00am – 5.00pm \nFri: 10.00am – 5.00pm \nSat: 11.00am – 4.00pm \nDelve into the world of Ewart Johns in our forthcoming exhibition ‘Ewart Johns – A life of Art’. \nEwart was born in Barry\, Glamorgan in 1923 and was mentored by Ceri Richards whilst at Cardiff College of Art in the early 1940s. \nHis career as an artist dovetailed his career as an academic (he was notably appointed the first Head of department for the Visual Arts at Lancaster University in 1972 among other posts). It spanned over 6 decades\, exhibiting fluid developments in style and direction. He was influenced by such giants as Picasso\, Matisse\, Moore\, Sutherland and above all by his former life drawing tutor Ceri Richards. \n“I have been persistently attracted to the subject of the human figure in integral relationships to its surroundings\, treating that figure to a greater or lesser degree as part of a general pattern of forms.” Ewart Johns \nHis early works from the 40s and 50s merge the human figure with strong colour grounds\, the figure radiating from the composition. Later we see that his attention is focused on the treatment of the flesh as the personality of the sitters become more visible. By the 70s and 80s his work reveals a sensual approach to the human form\, often painted from varying angles and often with motor cars. There is a pop art slant to many of the 70s works. By the late 80s and into the 90s his work frees up to show strong influences from Picasso and Klimt\, reflecting his interest in theatre and myth. These works are far looser and more abstracted than his middle period but it could be argued that they are some of his most visually appealing pictures. \nEven when his eyesight was failing (to ultimately complete blindness)\, his relentless dedication allowed him to produce sculptural works in wood and clay and he even managed to produce white line drawings on black grounds. \nIn recognition of a lifetime dedicated to not only fine art but also higher education\, he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Plymouth in 2001 (Promoted by Dartington College of Art) and notably was appointed the first Head of department for the Visual Arts at Lancaster University in 1972. \nEwart had many exhibitions of his work throughout his lifetime and a retrospective of his work was shown at the Cube Gallery\, Plymouth in 2007 .
