This is to reduce congestion so the visit is more enjoyable for all. \nThis Christmas\, wander through grand state rooms that invite stillness\, spark imagination\, and gently reconnect us with the quiet beauty of winter. \nA Christmas Enchantment draws from the landscape of Petworth’s park and gardens\, the artworks in the collection\, and the spirit of conservation. Each room glows with wonder: celestial skies\, roaming woodland creatures\, towering trees\, and spaces to pause and reflect. Mice scurry beneath gilded furniture\, foxes watch from shadowed corners\, and the stars themselves seem to whisper of returning light. \nOn Saturday 29 November and Saturday 20 December you can experience the festive atmosphere of Petworth House after dark\, with sparkling lights and a courtyard choir marking the turning of the season. A chance to enjoy the house’s winter transformation in a new light. The House will be open until 6.30pm (last entry at 6pm)\, with a choir performing at 5.30pm. \nOn Saturday 29 and Sunday 30 November there will be a Christmas makers market in the Battery House and Exhibition Room selling festive gifts\, held in partnership with Petworth Pop-up. \n

SUMMARY:A Tour of Petworth House Tunnels and Ice House
DESCRIPTION:14 JUNE 2025 \n 2.30 and 3.30p.m. \nThis 45 minutes tour of the underground world of Petworth House will be led by committee Member Ian Yonge who is also a tour guide at the House. \nThe National Trust will NOT be running its own tunnel tours this year so this Society visit will be your only chance to visit in 2025. \nWe start the tour in the Summer Dairy and learn how it could kill the unwary and the role it played in Petworth Town fire fighting.  We will learn about the tunnel and underground complex at Petworth House. We will  then walk through the 1750’s servants tunnel under the courtyard and hear about how it was constructed\, its use from the 1700’s to World War 11 and its current use as a home to bats- which will all have left for their Summer holidays! On route we will diverge down a short side tunnel to the well and hear how different methods were used to bring up water over the years from a donkey to a “bug”. We will see the remnants of the 1870’s hydraulic lift.  Leaving this tunnel we will then make our way to the 1784 underground ice house\, the largest domestic icehouse in England with its three chambers capable of holding in total over 280 cubic metres of ice. We will learn about how it was built and used\, where the ice came from and how important ice was to the Victorian dinner party. We will also visit the Wood Yard (normally closed to the public) and the Cow Yard to learn about the buildings there and how essential they were to the running of the “big House”. \nNot suitable for wheel chair users. \nThere will be two tours at 2.30 and 3.30 on Saturday 14th of June with numbers limited to 12 on each tour.  As there is a limit on numbers if you would like to join please book online at  https://Petworthsociety.co.uk   or by emailing emailing Bev Sewell at  Info@Petworth Society.co.uk \nCost to members and non members £10 to defray expenses. \nEntry through Church Lodge entrance and meet in Courtyard between house and servants quarters. Join a variety of horticultural experts for talks in the Garden Theatre Marquee. Speakers include Gardeners’ World presenter Adam Frost\, Head Gardener of Knepp Charlie Harpur\, authors Vanessa Berridge and Rebecca Bevan\, daffodil judge and exhibitor Richard Hilson and local National Trust gardeners. \nFrom Saturday 5 – Monday 21 April families can pick up a free ‘Ben Plants a Butterfly Garden’ trail to explore the Pleasure Garden and discover fun games and activities along the way. \nOur local community and volunteers have been busy hand crafting bluebells to create a spectacular display in the Exhibition Room\, there will also be an opportunity to create your own bluebell and add to this display \nFree event\, normal admission to Petworth applies.

DESCRIPTION:15 FEBRUARY 2025 \n3.30pm – 7.30pm \n\nTwo colourful laser light shows will be coming to Petworth House next month for the first time thanks to a collaboration between Chichester District Council and The National Trust.\nThe free shows – each lasting approximately 20 minutes – will kick off the February half term holiday\, taking place on Saturday 15 February at 5.30pm and 6.45pm. The beautiful Petworth House will be lit up accompanied by music that will be synchronised to the lights.\nDuring the day a number of activities will take place in the build-up to the shows. Petworth House will be open for free from 10.30am until 3.30pm\, while 12noon – 4.30pm there will also be free drop-in crafts in The Battery House where children will be able to get creative\, inspired by the laser show. In addition\, there will also be live music in The Courtyard from local musicians\, with performances running 3.30pm – 5.15pm and 6pm – 6.30pm plus local vendors providing food and drink.\n

Normal admission applies. Closed 24 & 25 December.\n\n\n\n\nChoirs in the Courtyard: There will be choirs singing festive songs in the courtyard on weekends from Saturday 30th November – Sunday 15th December at 11.30am and 2.30pm.\n\n\n\n\nChristmas Lates: On Saturday 30th November\, 7th December and Friday 20th December the House will be open until 6pm\, with a choir performing at 5pm.\n\n\nStep into a festive wonderland set in the grand state rooms of Petworth House. Marvel at beautifully decorated trees and garlands\, but be sure to look closely as there are some mischievous mice who have come to play.

DESCRIPTION:18 – 20 OCTOBER 2024 \n7.30pm – 9.30pm \n\n\nThe National Trust and Petworth Festival present a magical musical evening – a sequence of mini-concerts over one evening in four of the majestic state rooms of Petworth House. \n\n\n\nOver the course of the evening you will be entertained in sequence by the harpist Bonnie Scott\, the voice and guitar of The Juno Duo\, pianist Milde Daunoraite and The Marylebone Saxophone Trio – all brilliant final year students at the Royal Academy of Music. Your journey will follow a route that takes in The Grand Staircase\, The Carved Room\, the North Gallery and Chapel. After the second mini-concert ‘interval’ drinks will be available either in The Marble Hall and North Gallery. \n\n\n\nThe remarkable talents on show will be \n\n\n\nChapel – The Juno Duo (voice and guitar) \nCarved Room – Bonnie Scott (harp) \nGrand Staircase – Milde Daunoraite (piano) \nNorth Gallery – The Marylebone Saxophone Trio \n\n\nEvent description: on arrival at the Audit Room (drinks served from 6.45pm)\, audiences will be invited to join one of four groups which will then proceed at 7.25pm to the first of a series of simultaneous concerts\, each of which lasts 20 minutes. Following the first concert\, you will promenade to the second venue in groups for the second performance followed by a 20-minute interval and the third and fourth mini-concerts. The event will finish at approximately 9.30pm. \n\n\nPlease note\, the same programme will be performed on each of the three evenings. \n\n\n\nArrival is via the Church Lodge entrance in Petworth town only for this event.

Join experts and specialists including author Robyn Booth\, and Curator of Munstead Wood\, Caroline Ikin share tips on Spring gardening\, and discuss the ‘artist-gardener’ Gertrude Jekyll.
