Andy Warhol: My True Story’ curated by Jean Wainwright at Newlands House Gallery

7 JUNE – 14 SEPTEMBER 2025

Wednesday to Saturday 10.00am – 5.00pm

Sunday 11.00am – 4.00pm

Andy Warhol: My True Story”, curated by Jean Wainwright at Newlands House offers a fresh perspective on Andy Warhol in an intimate presentation of drawings, prints, photographs, recordings, films, and archival paraphernalia.

From drawings such as Man with Hearts and a fictitious One Million Dollar Bill, screenprints including Mona Lisa (Four times), photographs by contemporaries like Bob Adelman’s Andy Warhol Empties his Boots after being Pushed into the Pool by Edie Sedgewick, and an intimate film of his mother, we glimpse a very human Warhol experimenting with ideas and subject matter. Warhol was an inveterate collector and observer, and his early drawings reveal both his fascination with the ordinary and the way he processed and communicated his subject matter in his own particular style, developing themes which recur and evolve in his later works.

The exhibition intertwines artworks, photographs, objects and artefacts with reflective recordings of his entourage, those closest to him, and his family. What is revealed is an elusive and private man, hiding behind a public party-going persona, with his wig and dark glasses and provocative soundbites, creator of his Factories and iconic artworks and producer of the Velvet Underground. His prescience and lasting influence are also witnessed through artworks by contemporary artists such as Gavin Turk and Rob and Nick Carter, his “brand” exemplified through Warhol-themed objects and memorabilia. In this intimate and personal show, we experience Warhol in different ways as each room reveals a facet of him as well as those he inspired.

The domestic spaces of Newlands House Gallery, a Grade II-listed 18th Century townhouse, seem fitting for an exhibition that offers unexpected narratives on one of the most influential artists of the 20th century.

Jean Wainwright, an internationally recognised Warhol expert, is a London-based art historian, critic and curator. Her work most prominently features interviews with international artists, photographers, filmmakers, and curators. As a writer and academic, her interviews can be found in the numerous books, catalogues, monologues, and peer-reviewed journals, and she has appeared widely in the media, including national radio and television. A Professor of Contemporary Art and Photography at the University for the Creative Arts, Wainwright has a particular interest in authenticity in the artist interview and finding the artist’s “voice”.

Petworth Park Cricket Club to Host Historic Match Against MCC to Celebrate 150 Years of Sporting Heritage

Petworth, West Sussex

Petworth Park Cricket Club will mark a remarkable milestone on Sunday 8th June 2025, as the club hosts the prestigious Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) for a commemorative fixture celebrating 150 years of sport at Petworth Park Sports Ground.

This celebratory clash will see a Chairman’s XI, led by club chairman Alex Rees, take the field for Petworth Park Cricket Club. The match honours an extraordinary local sporting legacy dating back to 1875, when the sports ground was first established on the southern edge of Petworth House’s deer park.

The MCC – one of the most storied clubs in world cricket and guardians of the Laws of the Game – last played in Petworth in 1844 and 1845, when the original Petworth Cricket Club secured one win and one draw on the lawn in front of the house. 180 years later, the rivalry is renewed in one of the most scenic cricketing venues in the South Downs.

“Hosting the MCC in our 150th anniversary year is a proud moment,” said Chairman Alex Rees. “It’s a celebration of our heritage, our community, and the volunteers who have rebuilt the club into a thriving part of local life.”

A Day to Remember

The match begins at 11:30 AM at Petworth Park Cricket Club, Tillington Road (GU28 0QY), and promises a full day of community celebration:

  • High-quality amateur cricket in a stunning National Trust setting
  • Bar open throughout the day
  • Spectator-friendly atmosphere for all ages
  • BBQ from 5:00 PM, open to all visitors

Entry is free, and families, locals, and cricket enthusiasts are warmly encouraged to attend.

Acknowledgements

The club extends heartfelt thanks to its key community partners:

  • The National Trust
  • The Leconfield Estate
  • Petworth Town Council
  • South Downs National Park

Their continued support enables sport and recreation to flourish in one of England’s most picturesque historic parks.

A sustainable way to explore the Western Weald

The Petworth Way is a brand-new, two day, 25 mile, ‘Rail to Trail’ walking route, which connects Haslemere to Arundel with an overnight stop in Petworth. It offers a sustainable way to explore the eastern fringe of the Western Weald. In contrast to the chalk Downs, this distinct region within the South Downs National Park (SDNP) is celebrated for its vibrant lowland heaths, patchwork fields, and heavily wooded sandstone ridges.

If you have ever walked the South or North Downs, you’ll have admired the sweeping views over the Weald below. This route now invites you to immerse yourself in its beauty firsthand. Author Bill Bryson, who championed the inclusion of the Western Weald in the SDNP during his tenure as President of the Campaign for the Protection of Rural England, described this landscape as “a gorgeous piece of England set in the heart of one of the most overcrowded parts of the planet… this is a jewel.”

We couldn’t agree more!

The Petworth Way was Gerald Gresham-Cooke’s idea, Gerald being a walk leading authority on Petworth. Envisioning it as the perfect way to explore this peaceful corner of the South Downs sustainably while promoting his beloved hometown, Gerald laid the foundation for the walk. Though still happily walking in his 80s, he entrusted the task of route planning and wayfinding to four friends of the trail—Malinka (Rural Strides), Lucy (Sussex Exclusive), Laura (formerly Friends of the South Downs), Lesley (Langham Brewery)…. and Rambo the Patterdale. It has been our pleasure to find what we believe to be the best path and to bring Gerald’s vision to life.

As regular walkers of the Western Weald, we know and love this landscape—but we particularly enjoyed mapping this route. We believe it strikes the perfect balance of natural beauty, charming villages, and centuries of history.

With so much “green and pleasant land” to take in, the view from the Temple of the Winds on a clear day truly mesmerizes. Yet from this lofty perch on day one, the sea of green below invites adventure. Blackdown Ridge and Weybourne vineyards, with their manicured surroundings, along with the orchards and village of Lurgashall, gently introduce you to the Weald. It is only after lunch that you start to feel the remote and timeless quality of this area, and perhaps the wet clay under your feet too.

Geology shaped the Weald’s character, with its clay and sandstone defining both its charm and form. As you approach Petworth, a sandstone ridge rises ahead, marking the final challenge. After a steep climb, the pretty hamlet of Upperton and the vast expanse of Petworth Park and House welcome you to the end of your 12-mile day.

Traversing the Downs

Day two begins with a sweeping view toward the South Downs, setting the tone for the journey ahead. All day, the ridge is your companion, either in views or beneath your feet as you gradually ascend and traverse its undulating contours.

On the way, you’ll cross the former Midhurst to Pulborough railway, admire the striking architectural contrasts of Burton Park, and enjoy the sound of lively streams flowing away from the Downs’ scarp slope. Once up high, the Arun Valley unfolds in a breathtaking panorama. As finales go, day two easily holds its own against Petworth Park. The last mile or two deliver the broad beauty of Arundel Park, the tranquil charm of Swanbourne Lake, and the grandeur of the Hiorne Tower and Arundel Castle—even before you reach Arundel’s historic town centre. What a way to wrap up this unforgettable adventure!

Below, you’ll find a day-by-day breakdown of the Petworth Way. Happy walking!
