A Tour of Petworth House Tunnels and Ice House

14 JUNE 2025

 2.30 and 3.30p.m.

This 45 minutes tour of the underground world of Petworth House will be led by committee Member Ian Yonge who is also a tour guide at the House.

The National Trust will NOT be running its own tunnel tours this year so this Society visit will be your only chance to visit in 2025.

We start the tour in the Summer Dairy and learn how it could kill the unwary and the role it played in Petworth Town fire fighting.  We will learn about the tunnel and underground complex at Petworth House. We will  then walk through the 1750’s servants tunnel under the courtyard and hear about how it was constructed, its use from the 1700’s to World War 11 and its current use as a home to bats- which will all have left for their Summer holidays! On route we will diverge down a short side tunnel to the well and hear how different methods were used to bring up water over the years from a donkey to a “bug”. We will see the remnants of the 1870’s hydraulic lift.  Leaving this tunnel we will then make our way to the 1784 underground ice house, the largest domestic icehouse in England with its three chambers capable of holding in total over 280 cubic metres of ice. We will learn about how it was built and used, where the ice came from and how important ice was to the Victorian dinner party. We will also visit the Wood Yard (normally closed to the public) and the Cow Yard to learn about the buildings there and how essential they were to the running of the “big House”.

Not suitable for wheel chair users.

There will be two tours at 2.30 and 3.30 on Saturday 14th of June with numbers limited to 12 on each tour.  As there is a limit on numbers if you would like to join please book online at  https://Petworthsociety.co.uk   or by emailing emailing Bev Sewell at  Info@Petworth Society.co.uk

The Petworth Park Antiques & Fine Art Fair

16 – 18 MAY 2025

Friday 11.00am – 7.00pm

Saturday 10.30am – 6.00pm

Sunday 10.30am – 5.00pm

Following yet another successful fair in Petworth Park, our next event there is scheduled to be held from Friday 16 to Sunday 18 May 2025 – the tenth anniversary of this popular show.

The famous National Trust property in the picturesque market town of Petworth has proved an ideal venue, attracting thousands of eager visitors. In its spacious marquee, the Petworth Park Antiques & Fine Art Fair has over 60 exhibitors, predominantly members of The British Antique Dealers’ Association and LAPADA The Association of Art & Antiques Dealers. They offer for sale a wide range of desirable items such as fine period furniture, clocks, oil and watercolour paintings, maps, glass, sculpture, lighting, vintage watches, boxes, silver and jewellery together with ceramics, 20th century design objects, drawings and prints, textiles and carpets, garden artefacts, applied arts and many other decorative and unique works of art from the ancient to the contemporary.

We are very happy to again work with The National Trust at Petworth House as well as with the local dealer association PAADA and the Petworth Business Association, creating yet another exciting event. The grand 17th century house boasts an internationally important art collection, and together with its ‘Capability’ Brown landscaped country park, it provides a magnificent backdrop for our annual fair.

The fair has its own free car park by the marquee – access is from the A272 Tillington Road through the gate at New Lodges. The AA signs will direct traffic to this entrance and not to the main car park on the A283, where there is a charge of £4 for non-National Trust members. Disabled parking close to the fair entrance. The pedestrian entrance is via the Cricket Lodge gate, also on the A272, or via the Cowyard.

A courtesy shuttle bus service will operate between the fair car park, the entrance to Petworth House and the town centre, running hourly between 11 am and 6 pm (5pm on Sunday).

Fair visitors enjoy free access to Petworth House during the three day event. National Trust members and Petworth House ticket holders may attend the antiques fair free of charge.

Light refreshments are available in the restaurant inside the fair, operated by The Naked Food Company.

Dogs that can be carried and guide/assistance dogs are welcome.

Lunatraktors + special guest

6 JUNE 2025

7.45pm – 10.30pm

We close out our Spring Season with a genuinely unique concert. There is literally nobody else like these guys, and we’re so happy that we’ve finally landed them.

Lunatraktors are choreographer and percussionist Carli Jefferson, and nonbinary vocalist and composer Clair Le Couteur. Influenced by flamenco, post-punk, and trip-hop, they strip back traditional folk to rhythm and voice performed with fascinating theatricality. The pair turned heads in 2019 when their DIY debut This Is Broken Folk – recorded live in a viaduct arch by Ramsgate harbour – made it onto MOJO Magazine’s Top Ten Folk Albums.

Their newer work blends analogue synth, whistles, accordion with tuned drums, vocal harmonies, and a hybrid of tap dance and body percussion, which Jefferson developed after touring with Stomp. A double act in the old-fashioned sense, Le Couteur’s channeling voices of multiple tragi-comic characters match Jefferson’s hyper-expressive performance style.

The Burning Glass + special guest

9 MAY 2025

7.45pm – 10.30pm

People often stop us in the street and ask if we will bring back certain bands to Petworth again where we’ve had a particularly brilliant night. A regular conversation goes like this – “When will you get that tall guy with the ukulele back where we all danced, what an amazing night”. The answer is now. We loved them too.

As a reminder, The Burning Glass are a six piece acoustic band that play powerful storytelling pop music that makes you want to dance. Edwin Brooks (the tall guy with the ukulele) writes songs that tell stories and make people laugh dance and sometimes cry. The band, and what a band they are, bring together musicians from classical, jazz and folk backgrounds using tuned percussion, ukulele, bass, electric guitar, drums and lots of singing to bring these songs to life. Over the last decade the band have built a cult following UK festival circuit, and they are firm favourites at Glastonbury.

Laura Jane Wilkie & Ian Carr + Ian Roland

16 APRIL 2025

7.45PM – 10.30PM

A rapidly rising star in the Scottish folk scene, Laura Jane Wilkie has a unique style rooted in Highland fiddle traditions folded in with influences from a wide range of genres.

Her debut solo project ‘Vent’, released by the iconic folk label Hudson Records, is centred around Waulking songs – ancient women’s work songs adapted for the fiddle, and demonstrates what a versatile, creative and adept artist she is.

Laura has toured across the world in various different groups and artists within the contemporary folk music scene, but Petworth Sessions will see Laura joined by guitarist and producer Ian Carr.
